I need to set up some better long term tape retention methods. Was looking into enabling a GFS tape pool in Veeam. I had 2 points I was hoping I could get clarification on.
First, are the restore point levels overlapping? For example, if I did 12 monthly and 4 quarterly points, is that just still 1 year of protection, with the 4 quarterly and every third monthly being the same point? Or is it 2 years where the 4 quarters start after the 12 monthly backups? The default for a GFS is 14 days, 4 weeks, 12 months, 4 quarters and 1 year. If those overlap, that is only 1 year of retention still. But if they are not concurrent it would be 3 years and 6 weeks.
Second, should I use a GFS media pool as the singular tape target for these GFS jobs? Or is it meant as a secondary copy while using a normal media pool with shorter duration for the primary tape copy?
Thanks for any help you can offer or any other additional tips on moving from a regular pool to one with GFS retention.

Re: GFS clarification
Hi Taylor
You have summed all gfs restore point. It doesn‘t work that way.
It‘s works the similar to backup job retention. A backup which was tagged yearly will have a retention (Overwrite protection) of 1 year. It will not get summed up 3 years and some weeks.
If you have enabled all 4 gfs retention (weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly) and they fall on the same day, veeam will only write the elder gfs tape.
You find this documented here:
Veeam Guide - Schedule Overlap
If you have configured all four to always start on the first saturday (for yearly the first saturday in the year, monthly the first saturday in the month and so on), then veeam will only write the yearly on Jan 2nd this year. It doesn‘t have to write a weekly, monthly or quarterly, because the others would have the same restore points on the tape like the yearly and it has already a higher retention as the others.
We use only GFS Media Pools.
