GFS Strategy and media set name update

Hello,

I have a misunderstanding on the GFS part.

I created a GFS Media Pool with a weekly media set (4 weeks retention) and a monthly media set (5 months retention).

The "Add Tapes from media pool automatically" and "Append Backup files to incomplete tapes" options are enabled.

The backup is going well but I don't understand how it handles the name of the media set.

For example, the name of the current weekly media set dates from August (while the retention is 4 weeks) and the system continues to use this name on backups while we are on october.

Shouldn't there be a new media set name based on tape retention / rotation? So every 4 weeks, a name update?

Is it because I leave the tapes in the robot (an outsourcing will be implemented soon) and it uses the tapes from the previous backup set?

I'm going to have to outsource the tapes every week following the rotation so I want to understand how it works.

Correct, media set name is created when the fist tape is added to the media set sequence. Since data is appended and never leaves the media (so no exports), new data is constantly appended to the tape media in the library and as a result media set remains the same. Thanks!

OK I understand. So the tapes should be outsourced every week to avoid this kind of ambiguity.

What if I uncheck "Append Backup files to incomplete tapes" ? It would create a new media set every week ? (not going to do it since it would requires much more tape).

Yup, new media set will be created every gfs tape job run and data wont be appended to previously used tapes. Thanks!
