Move file to tape catalog to different Veeam server
Hello,
one of our customers wants to use a new backup server while keeping the complete file to tape backup catalog that is stored in the Veeam database. The catalog has entries to millions of files in millions of folders. We know that it is best practice to simply put the old tapes in the new library that is connected to the new backup server and just catalog the tapes. But the customer has over 150 tapes and only a small new library. Is it possible to restore a backup of the old Veeam database to the new server while keeping all the information / configuration / file to tape catalog data from the previous server / Veeam installation?

You need to use a veeam configuration backup, but this will import every setting and job from the old server.
There is no granular choice of whats to import to the new server.
You can read about the best methods here in the community Boards:

Re: Move file to tape catalog to different Veeam server
Thanks for your reply. But would the configuration backup restore also restore the file to tape catalog (which of the millions of files in all the backup sets is located on which tape)? The config backup is just around 500 MB, the whole Veeam database is over 10 GB. That is why the customer uses a full blown SQL server. So can we be sure that all this file data that is stored in the database will be included by restoring the config backup?

Sorry, I am not really sure if it''s included. Normal restore Points are included in the config backup.
I thought, that they (File catalog) were included too.

Re: Move file to tape catalog to different Veeam server
Please note that the Catalog for tapes is not included in the Configuration Backup as per here - https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110
Veeam Backup & Replication exports information about the following objects:
Backup infrastructure components and objects: hosts, servers, backup proxies, repositories, WAN accelerators and jobs, global settings configured on the backup server and so on.
Backups: backups, replicas and backup copies created on the backup server.
Sessions: job sessions performed on the backup server.
Tapes: tape libraries connected to the backup server.
So you would need to follow the process to rescan the the tapes and then catalog them again.

Correct, file catalog, unfortunately, is too huge for the configuration backup utility. I'd recommend to keep existing SQL database if you need to keep the file catalog, possibly use is as a database for your new Veeam B&R deployment. Thanks!

Re: Move file to tape catalog to different Veeam server
Thanks for clarification! We decided to let the old Veeam database live and use it for SQL queries if the customer needs information about files, dates and tape barcodes. This SQL query from user winnt helped: post232351.html#p232351
