Restore VMs from tape in the event of a Datacenter or data corruption issue
Is there a procedure that covers the steps to follow should all data be encrypted or a similar disaster and the only restore option is from tape?
I have found a procedure that covers building new Veeam servers and then connecting to repositories containing the backups but what if they are also lost? What would the process be to restore all data from tape? Is there a way to connect the tape libraries and then easily import the tapes so that the relevant backups can be identified? Or does each tape need to be loaded and inventoried?
Thanks

Hello,
would your scenario allow to import a configuration backup, or do you really only have tapes for restore? And do you use "backup to tape" or "file to tape"?
Best regards,
Hannes

Looking at worst case where only tape is available. Most are backup to tape with a small number of file to tape jobs
The scenario should allow to import the configuration backup

Re: Restore VMs from tape in the event of a Datacenter or data corruption issue
Hello,
with no configuration backup, it's setting up a new VBR server and import everything (meaning every tape needs to be inserted into the library). I mean, there is only tape and no black voodoo magic involved
In V11, the file-to-tape catalog is not included in the configuration backup. In V12 we improve that.
Technically, one can always start with "tapes only". But it takes more time than having a configuration backup available.
Best regards,
Hannes
