Tape copy from LTO4 to LTO8

Post by Giacomo_N »

Hi all, our tape library it's very old, we want to replace with a new LTO8 library and moving the all LTO4 tapes (40 tapes) data to the new tapes.
I know, LTO8 can't read the LTO4, my idea is to attach two library to Veeam and "copy" (direct or indirect) the data from the LTO4 library to LTO8.
Is it possible? If yes, how?

Thanks in advance!

Hi.
There is no direct Tape-to-Tape copy yet, so right path would be:
1. Restore data from LTO4 tape to temporary staging Repository location
2. Write staged data to LTO8
3. Remove staged data
Rinse and repeat for each LTO4 tape.
/Cheers!

Thank you Egor for the answer, the step 2 is it a "files tape job backup" ?

Thanks

Depends what you have on LTO4 tapes at the moment:
- if those backups are plain files, than yes, File To Tape Job will do the trick.
- if you have Veeam Backups there(.vbk\.vibs created with Veeam Backup to Tape job previously), than you can use Backup to Tape again, since those restore points are tracked in Veeam Catalog.
/Thanks!

Please keep in mind that backup to tape job ignores Imported backups (backup files without existing backup jobs), so looks like file to tape would be the only option here. Cheers!
