Tape media managment

Post by mschlott »

Is there a good document on how to manage tape media in Veeam 7? I just replaced a stand alone tape drive with a tape library. The Pool that I had under my old tape drive is still there under Offline tapes (1), but does not exist under my new tape library. Are pools unique to tape drives and libraries? This seems counter intuitive.

When I invnentoried the library I got a bunch of errors as below. I am concerned that one of the tapes was successfully inventoried and moved to the free pool while others failed with "Tape Erasure Error". This indicates to me that the tape that was moved to the free pool was erased without asking me if it was ok to erase. This tape has data on it from another backup software, so this is a problem for me.

Code: Select all

12/3/2013 9:55:51 AM Error Error: Terminated
12/3/2013 9:55:52 AM Error Completed with error at Tuesday, December 3, 2013 9:55:51 AM

When I inventoried a tape that is in a Media Pool it showed up with the correct media set, but it did not move it to a pool. It left the tape in the unrecognized pool. Is this normal behavior?

I like the way Veeam allows me to copy my backups to tape and this is a great improvement over what I was doing before. I just need some guidance on how to manage my tapes and what my limitations are.

Hello Mike,

Please, take a look at User Guide > Managing Tapes (p.424) or Veeam Help Center. All the Tape Job and Media Pool options are well described there.
Are pools unique to tape drives and libraries?
Yes, media pool is "linked" to tape library by design.

As for the errors during Inventory job, please, make sure you installed the lastest patch R2a. Thank you.

Thanks. I just found those pages on the Veeam Help Center. As described, they are helpful and answered my questions regarding pools.

I just installed the R2 patch yesterday and attached the library today. I have opened a support case for the inventory issues.
