Virtual full backup - Can not find config

Post by hirratas »

Hello

According to the Help Center ( https://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/vsp ... ackup.html ) I should be able to configure Virtual Full Backup in the B2T Job.
You can schedule the virtual full on a specific day (or days) of week.
Also when I run the Job no vsb file is being created in the Repository.

Source Job is Forever Forward Incremental. And B&R itself is v9 Update 1.

Or should I open a case?

Thanks

Hi,

Please check this link, paragraph 2. Please feel free to ask additional questions.

P.S. What do you mean by .vsb file?

Thanks

1. On the day the tape job runs, it creates a VSB file and stores it on the backup repository, next to restore points in the backup chain.

Oh great
Thanks, now I can find the schedule.
Maybe I am missing the point but, can (and if yes how) can I make sure that always a virtual full backup with the latest data (when the last forever forward incremental backup ran), regardless what day I choosed in the schedule, is being created / used in the B2T job?

It's not possible, unfortunately. You can schedule virtual full to be created on the same day with your backup to tape job, in this case backup to tape will pickup the latest increment.
On the day the tape job runs, it creates a VSB file and stores it on the backup repository, next to restore points in the backup chain.
Oh, that slipped out from my mind! VSB file is created on the day when virtual full is to happen. For example, today is Thursday, virtual Full is scheduled on Friday, B2T is scheduled to start on Saturday - you'll see VSB being created on Saturday, so please explain your job settings so we can determine if it works correctly.

Thanks.

Ok thanks a lot so far.
Let's sssume this:

The Source job creates Forever Forward Incremental scheduled on every work day (Mo - Fr).
The B2T Job is configured to backup only Full Backups, and the Virtual Full Backup Schedule is configured for every day. So I "hooked" every day (Mo - Sunday).
Regardless when I start this B2T Job, the Backup will always Backup a Full Backup with the latest Data.

Is this correct?

I guess there will be many .vsb Files after some time. But this should not be a problem, because they are not big, right?

Partially :) If you schedule daily VF then on the day B2T starts it will create 7 vbks, one for each day. Could you please elaborate on your goals, maybe a better approach can be used?

.vsb gets deleted after B2T has finished so they don't stack up.

Oh, I understand.

I have two B2T Jobs. Each with multiple source jobs.
Each source job runs on a different time.

The goal is to(when I start the B2T job) have a Full Backup of each source job.
But each Full Backup should have the latest incremental backup included.

I do not always run my two B2T jobs on Thursday for example.
I start it manually when I have time for it. Not automatically.
So I can not schedule VF on one particular day.

According to your answers I guess I just need to go into the Virtual Full Backup Schedule and set it to the current day right before I start the B2T Job to achieve my Goal.

This is not a problem for me. I just was not aware of this.

However it really would be nice if Veeam will make this a bit "user friendly".

Is it an option for you to schedule B2T to run automatically as new backup file appears or right after any of the mentioned source backup jobs?

No Because there would be many useless B2T Backups.
Useless because I only need to bring the Tapes offsite every 2 or 3 months.

Then you should stick with the approach that you've mentioned previously:

Thanks
