B&R GUI for Veeam Agent suggestions

Post by Poweruser »

Hi!

If you manage your (Windows) Veeam Agent there are some things to note:

a) If you open the contect menu for a physicial server you can select "Reboot". This should be labeled "reboot agent" or "reboot o/s". So everybody knows what will be rebooted without watching manuals first :-)
b) you cant select a location for your physical servers, so you get a warning the no location is not the same as somelocation if you add a job. add option to set a backup location to the agent.
c) there is an auto job at 01:00am which is a maintenance job who updates agents. this job creates a success email using the global default settings. nevertheless these global settings are not the same as the b&r global settings. where is the dialoque to change the agent global settings (for mail)?
d) there should be an overview over ALL jobs. if you want to print out an timetable or note it down you have to check all jobs, the config backup job, the maintenance jobs, etc. i bet you will miss one date if you write them down.
there should be one page where you can see the whole timeline or at least ALL jobs. (including maintenance, config, etc)
e) if you disable agent auto-update you should be able to enable message, notice, warning, info, whatever for agent updates available. also including release notes etc into B&R without having to check the website.

Hi Poweruser.

Thanks for the provided feedback.
If you open the contect menu for a physicial server you can select "Reboot". This should be labeled "reboot agent" or "reboot o/s". So everybody knows what will be rebooted without watching manuals first
To be honest, never heard about 'rebooting the application'. Usually when saying Reboot, we mean server, but maybe we need a bit more clarity here.
you cant select a location for your physical servers, so you get a warning the no location is not the same as somelocation if you add a job. add option to set a backup location to the agent.
You can set location on Protection Group.
there is an auto job at 01:00am which is a maintenance job who updates agents. this job creates a success email using the global default settings. nevertheless these global settings are not the same as the b&r global settings. where is the dialoque to change the agent global settings (for mail)?
Granular email settings for both protection groups and managed by agent jobs will become available in upcoming update.
if you disable agent auto-update you should be able to enable message, notice, warning, info, whatever for agent updates available. also including release notes etc into B&R without having to check the website.
Agent updates are included in every Veeam B&R Update (and it's impossible to update agents without upgrading Veeam B&R), so there is no chance to miss it.

If B&R Autoupdates them and you need to update B&R first.
Then the option "auto-update agent" in the rescan schedule option would make no sense.

i fear if i leave this ticked on it may force a reboot. that should never occur automatically.

Poweruser,

Automatic reboot is controlled by the next checkbox. If that's unchecked - agent wont be rebooted automatically.

As you described above, its always the O/S whats rebooted. you said "agent wont be rebooted..".
its a system (o/s) reboot. an agent reboot would be an agent restart (of the application service).
just to be a bit more precise ;-)

But is an reboot needed after an agent was updated? i think not, if its programmed well.
so why is there this checkbox? it implicits, that without a reboot the new agent wont be active or working correctly.
needs to be clarified in gui too.

also an automatic reboot of an machine is dangerous (especially on a server).
it should never be checked per default and it should be executed with a prior warning only.
maybe there should be no such option. and if.. add shutdown too, wake-on-lan,...
