Backing up across the internet to a cloud provider

Post by brf »

We use VAW to back up company laptops to our VBR repository. The VAW agents run in Workstation-licensed mode and policy is managed via VBR. Lately, our laptops are rarely at the office so we're not getting backups. Most users do connect to the office with VPN, but we have backups across VPN blocked - we can't have them chewing up our office's internet bandwidth.

We want to move laptops to some form of cloud based backup where VAW sends the backups to a cloud provider rather than our office. Haven't been able to find much info on the best ways to make this happen, and some of the info I have seen seems conflicting. One option would be to use a Cloud Connect provider as the destination repository for these computers, right? Also I noticed that Microsoft OneDrive is a valid destination for VAW backups nowadays - but we've never used OneDrive.

I assume it would be an option to bring up our own VAW-compatible repository at a cloud provider (eg: AWS) and then create some kind of VPN between the laptops and our AWS-hosted repo? But the VPN there would probably introduce more complexity than I'm wanting.

Are there other options, or something I'm missing?

Thanks.

Hi,

Did you consider working with Service Provider?
You can pick a Service Provider to work with Cloud Connect services.

Thanks!

Sure, I've considered that route, already looked over a list of potential providers. So you think for my scenario, that's the solution that makes the most sense?

Yes, one of the pros of working with a service provider is that he could be close by and offer better connectivity and restore capabilities compared to public clouds.
