Backup going on forever
Hello,
Case ID : 03050630
I opened a case regarding a problem of backup running "forever" (more than 8hours, doing nothing)
There is no cpu or ssd or network activity.
The task state = "running" but nothin appened.
Most of the time, it remains on 0%
We were waiting for the 2.2 update of the veeam agent for windows, with hope it will fix the problem
I installed it today and the backup run "normally" up to 14% and then get "stuck" for almost 5 hours. (maybe the user restarted the PC at this time)
I just checked this midday when the user was gone : the job is running, but stuck at 0% (the same as the version 2.1 of veeam agent)
So, is there other people having the same problem ?
is it a "free" licence limitation ?
More details =
backup target = our veeam B&R 9.5 server (one of the repositories)
My own PC is using the veeam agent and never fail a backup (same settings, same network)
I installed the veeam agent on 2 other PC (Dell XPS laptop) and the veeam agent seldom passes a backup.
Windows 10 pro 1703 on mine and 1709 on the 2 Dells
Regards,
Michel

Hello Michel,
It looks like the infrastructure specific issue, so kindly keep working with our support team. So, is there other people having the same problem ?
There is no such limitation - free version is fully functional. Thanks!is it a "free" licence limitation ?

Re: Backup going on forever
You may want to check and see if Throttle backup when system is busy is enabled - see https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=21
I installed VAW on some Exchange servers and was astounded that some took 24 hours or longer to backup. If I recall correctly, this option is enabled by default. Once disabled, backups were tremendously faster.
One more item to check.

Re: Backup going on forever
Hello,
I tried again this morning, before the user is at work => exactely the same problem : the backup runs as it should up to 14% (using all the network bandwitdth) => at 14%, there is no more activity (idle cpu, idle SSD, idle network : nothing is going on, but the state remains on 14%)
I just disabled the "Throttle backup when system is busy" and the computer is restarting right now. I will give it another try after that.
EDIT : same result. It takes about 1-2 minutes going from 0% to 14% and then, it stops. (maybe better to check what is going on compared to version 2.1 of the agent where it would sit on 0% forever)
new case ID = 03157388

I also suspect VSS to be the root cause (so it looks like support engineers are on track). Let us know how the investigation goes, cheers!

Re: Backup going on forever
Indeed, when I launched a "vssadmin list writers" command, there is no response
And moreover, when I compare with my own PC, there is also a "timing" problem.
My PC = while the job is running, there is clear activity from the computer (cpu/disk/network)
The "faulty" PC = even when it works, there are some "idle" time in the process (example : it can wait at 0% or 99% for several minutes, even 30 minutes, doing nothing)

Re: Backup going on forever
Hi,
some news about this problem : it seems the problem comes from the "BITS" service
I disabled it, and can't "fault" the vssadmin list writer anymore
The VAW backup always worked when the BITS was disabled
And furthermore, I could not stop the BITS service once the "vssadmin list writers" was not responding.
=> the BITS service state was stuck on "stopping"
Action taken = running the "Windows BITS troubleshooter" tool
link to the microsoft webpage => https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/hel ... bleshooter
direct link to the tool for Windows 10 => https://aka.ms/wudiag
Launch the tool and then choose "BITS" => proceed and accept all solutions
It seems to have fixed the problem.
We now have to wait and see if this is a permanent fix.

Re: Backup going on forever
Hi
More data on this problem :
for one of the failing PC, it works since the BITS fixing
for the other, I upgraded it to windows 10 1803 and disabled the windows search service.
In both case, it is working since then.
I am still waiting for more time before installing the Veeam Agent on 2 more PCs
regards
