Backup of XP in VMware Workstation

Post by hoFFy »

I've got a customer who runs XP VMs in VMware Workstation under Windows 7.
Is it possible to create a consistent Backup of these VMs if they should be running 24/7?
I know I can't do Guest FIlesysteme Restore or things like that. I only want to make sure that I can restore the complete VM (the vmdk of VMware Workstation)

Hi Sebastian,

Windows XP unsupported OS for the Agent, so you cannot back up this guest OS.
However, you can deploy VAW to the machine running VMware Workstation and back up entire guest OS image, which will include VMs running in this OS too.
Please note, that this backups will be crash-consistent. Thanks!

Thank you,
I know that XP isn't supported. I was curious if the backup will be crash consistent (in the free version, too?) if the VM keeps running during backup.

Yes, it will be crash-consistent as AAP disabled for the guest OS inside VMs.
You can shut down VMs prior to backup process or another way is to manually execute pre-freeze\post-thaw scripts. Thanks!
