deduplication ratio for VEB backup files
Hi,
I am going to keep second copy of VEB backups on offsite server. I would like to save some disk space with Win2012 server deduplication. In my tests deduplication ratio is within 40-50% (eg. 315GB of backup files occupy 160GB of space on disk).
I have much better deduplication results with Veeam Backup and Recovery Free backup files (70-80%) when I use deduplication friendly compression.
Is there a way to enable deduplication friendly compression for VEB?
Is there some other trick to improve deduplication ratio for VEB backup files?
Thanks,
Nikolay

Re: deduplication ratio for VEB backup files
Hello Nikolay,
The deduplication is enabled by default and cannot be changed. However, for Veeam Backup and Replication repository as a target you could use the following options "Align backup file data blocks" and "Decompress backup data blocks before storing"

Nikolay, compression level cannot be changed in the UI as well, so you can try to follow Dima's advice to save more space on your repository.

Re: deduplication ratio for VEB backup files
Unfortunately, it’s not supported in free version of Veeam Backup.

Dima, Thanks for explanation.
Another question: Win2012 R2 server deduplication has two options: general purpose file server and VDI server. Which one works better with VEB backup files?

Re: deduplication ratio for VEB backup files
I don't think that we have tested that, but backup structure of VEB files is the same as for Veeam B&R, and as far as I know people are using general purpose file server for storing these files.
