Endpoint file level backup into repository very slow

Post by UT2015 »

Hi,

we have B+R V9 running on our backup server, which backs up a VMware environment to disk and to tape.

Additionally we have some physical servers which are backed up with Endpoint Backup into the Veeam repository.

Additionally we have some systems, which copy *actively* data to a share "external" on the backup server daily.

Because we want to have the ability to have different restore points on disk of that data mentioned last, we are using Endpoint Backup on the backup server itself to backup the local data (in the share "external") into the Veeam repository.

The problem is: This Endpoint Backup is extremely slow. Normaly we are able to copy data to the backup server with approx. 200 MB/sec. This Endpoint Backup copies local data with only approx. 19MB/sec.

Is there a different (faster) way to backup that data located on the backup server into the repository?

Hi UT2015,

Unfortunately, the performance of the File level backup over network is a known issue. Should be fixed in the upcoming version. As a temporary workaround you can use a volume level backup with some folders being excluded – that should run a way faster.

Hi,

the file level backup is local only and not over Network.

What do you mean with "volume level backup with excluded folders"? When I select "volume level backup" it is not possible to exclude folders.

UT2015,

Yes, you can go to File level backup, uncheck several folders and still run a volume level backup. Check the text label near the volume to be sure what mode is used. For example, file level backup is used on the screenshot below

That's exactly what our (very slow) job was configured like.

Yes, but if you check the volume and then uncheck several folders you still can run the volume level backup. Can you test this approach?

This is indeed very impractical. It is not really intuitive and clear to use.

When selecting "File Level Backup" and then selecting single folders to backup, the "File Level Backup" is active.

When selecting "FIle Level Backup", then selecting a volume and then deselecting folders not to backup the "Volume Level Backup" is active.

The UI should be more intuitive in that case.

What is technically the difference between file level backup and volume level backup with excluded folders?

I made the changes as suggested, which led to Veeam Endpoint performing a full backup, which took quite long. But it seems it was faster. Before the speed was limited to approximately 20MB/sec, now it went up to 190MB/sec.

This should be fixed and changed very soon IMHO....

Fair point, thanks!

Volume level backup excludes files from the snapshot while file level backup builds the list of the files that should be included into backup. The second approach is much slower.

Volume Level backup is now working with approximately 195MB/sec, while File Level backup was working with only approx. 19MB/sec before, so thanks for the hint.

But the UI should really be improved...

UT2015,

Awesome! Regarding the UI we will discuss it with the team – thanks for heads up!

5 years later this is still a thing?

If there are two ways the software can back up a selection of directories, and one of those ways is 10x faster... why does the slow way even exist?
