Error when booting from recovery media Windows 10

Post by bhagen »

I'm using the community version of VAW at home. I created a recovery media .iso in April '21 using (I think) v4.x of VAW for one of my pcs. The other day we took a few short power hits in a row, now Windows 10 on that pc won't boot properly.

So I created a usb boot disk using rufus and that recovery media .iso. I boot the pc from that usb stick, but I get "an unexpected error has occurred. Error code: 0xc0000017".

Pressing Enter or F8 does nothing; it just stays at that screen.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help!

Hello,
So I created a usb boot disk using rufus and that recovery media .iso.
I guess that's the point and out of Veeam scope.

Please use a USB stick created by Veeam. USB sticks can be created on a different PC (remember to add the drivers of the other PC). I also suggest to use the latest version of the agent.

Best regards,
Hannes

Install a veeam Agent on another pc (if you have lost your old machine) and use the Veeam Recovery Media Wizard to create a bootable Recovery Media on a usb stick.

Forgive me if I seem a bit thick this morning, but...running that wizard will only create recovery media for the pc you're running the wizard on, correct? That's not what I need. (I don't see an option to create a bootable recovery media using a specific iso in the kb you mentioned.)

As I mentioned, I already created the recovery media for the failed PC back in April '21; I saved it as an iso to my external backup drive. I then did incremental backups a few times after that.

Now I need to do this: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=50, so I can boot from that iso and resotre the entire pc that I backed up. I was under the impression that creating a bootable cd/dvd/usbstick with that iso (from any pc) would allow me to boot into the veeam recovery wizard.

If the iso is not working, try the way hannes has proposed.
You can create an usb stick from another pc and use it to boot the crashed pc and restore it from your backup storage. It works most of the time. Most likely you have to include drivers for the crashed pc.

If it works, then you can restore your pc. If it not works, at least you tried.

The main goal is to get your computer back running. So i recommend to try everything possible.

I just realized I'd not gotten back to this. The "thickness" finally wore off, and I understood what @hannes and @mildur (and Veeam) were meaning!

Yes: from within Veeam, create a recovery boot disk to a usb stick. Boot the broken pc from that usb stick, and the recovery wizard will eventually let you point to and restore from the latest "recovery media" .iso you created.

All good now!

Thanks for the feedback.

Can I ask you something about that? When you talk about the latest "recovery media" .iso, are you talking about creating a iso which contains the backup files? VBKs and vib?

If yes, that‘s not what a veeam recovery media is.
A veeam Recovery media is what you have done with your usb stick. It will start the Windows RE for using the veeam agent to do bare medal recovery.
After you booted from the veeam recovery media, you can start the restore and choose a source for the restore. The source can be any storage from this list:
- any local storage
- vbr backup repository
- fileshare on a nas
- cloud connect repositories

I assume, what you have done, is creating a iso with the backup files and expected it to be bootable. If not, I‘m sorry for misunderstanding.

Oh, my bad. I should have said "Boot the broken pc from that usb stick, and the recovery wizard will eventually let you point to and restore from the latest recovery point." My backups go to an external HDD, so that was the source of the latest recovery point for me.

Good catch.
