Image restore fail start - agent 5 to 6

Post by Tonna-MerloSpa » 1 person likes this post

I have a veeam image made with agent 5.0.3.4708
I did the restore with a stick created with agent 6.0.0.960
The restore is successful but the boot of the operating system fails.

If I run the restore with a key made with the 5.0.3.4708 agent, the same as in the image, the system starts up correctly without problems.
What could generate this?

THANK YOU

Hello,

That sounds like a technical issue. Please provide a support case ID for this issue, as requested when you click New Topic.
Without case number, the topic will eventually be deleted by moderators.

I recommend also to analyze the minidump which should be created in case of a bluescreen.

Best regards,

Translated with google
Good morning,
before opening a technical ID I indicate that the system does not go to dump / bluescreen.
The system indicates that it cannot boot the operating system and to try additional boot options.
If even with this detail it is assumed to be a technical problem I will open a ticket for veeam endpoint backup free.

THANK YOU

Buongiorno,

Adding a comment because this sounds like it could be a boot configuration issue which I've encountered before, and I can attest to troubleshooting issues that require access to BIOS settings and/or the computer's boot menu remotely is ridiculously challenging, so the tip might save some time troubleshooting with support if it turns out to be relevant.

If the computer is relatively new, came with Windows 10 or Windows 11, then this is probably not relevant and can likely be disregarded.

I have not had this specific issue with Veeam, but with similar scenarios involving reinstalling Windows from a bootable installation drive, I have seen this issue occur when the computer supports both BIOS and UEFI booting, where the previous installation was configured with BIOS booting and the new installation was configured with UEFI booting.

I have made that mistake myself in the past of booting a Windows installation disk manually in UEFI mode or BIOS mode and then the computer automatically tries booting from the other when it starts up, and fails.

Veeam can maybe clarify how the recovery process from bootable media would handle this, but my guess is the backed up installation was booting in BIOS mode, which may be referred to as "Legacy" mode depending on the computer firmware, and the recovery media was manually booted in UEFI mode from a boot menu so when Veeam recovered the data the Windows installation was expected by Veeam to also boot in UEFI mode. So either the computer is attempting to do a UEFI boot on Windows configured for BIOS "Legacy" booting, or the other way around.

Good morning,
we tried to restore the image made with the agent 6 version and its recovery key with the same version but unfortunately the result is identical.
Even trying to check the bios between UEFI and Legacy the result is identical.
In this case I will report a case to the support that I will add to the thread.

Buongiorno,
