Hi,
Just some feedback on our investigation into Veeam Agent for Windows as a candidate for our physical to cloud backup solutions;
We're a reseller and Cloud Connect provider, Veeam has been our preferred platform for virtual backups for some time now, however, while investigating the use cases for Veeam for Windows we discovered a licensing blocker which will probably stop us from being able to use it in physical environments.
The Agent allows for only a single backup job. While this can be done to a Veeam repository (free) you cannot then use the repository server to copy the job to cloud connect or another offsite repository without a B&R license. This means that to retain an on site copy, as well as a cloud connect offsite copy, you are essentially paying for 3 different product SKUs to make the solution work. This places it far out of reach for SME/SMB customers who have been used to similar products having a relatively low cost.
Ideally we'd like to be able to have an agent, then a cloud connect copy for just the cost of those two licenses, while retaining an on site copy. I don't know how feasible this is to your marketing and business strategy but it does seem strange that the agent can be targeted at Cloud Connect directly, and it can copy to the free version of B&R for a local repository, but you cannot do both without a somewhat unnecessary additional cost.
Thanks,
Jon

Re: Licensing feedback
This should not be the case, B&R license should not be required in this scenario... well, at least there was no intention to require one. This makes no sense for a start - why would we force you to buy VMware or Hyper-V socket to protect purely physical shop. And we put common sense above all.Jonneh wrote:While this can be done to a Veeam repository (free) you cannot then use the repository server to copy the job to cloud connect or another offsite repository without a B&R license.
Let's investigate and if there's some bug, we will fix it!

Re: Licensing feedback
If you install Veeam B&R Free Edition you can license it with your Worstation Server agent. Then you can use your Veeam Free as your local backup repository and regular backup copy job out to your CC environment. Veeam has not announced this pretty neat licensing feature very aggressive but there are multiple posts on this forum from Veeam employees which confirms that this is supported. And since Veeam B&R Free actually get licensed with the workstation agent this also must be intentional. Remember to switch the Free edition to Full mode after you have applied the workstation/server license.

Re: Licensing feedback
Jonathan,
Thanks Frank!
Please submit a case to our support team. It's either issue or a bug that needs to be fixedWhile this can be done to a Veeam repository (free) you cannot then use the repository server to copy the job to cloud connect or another offsite repository without a B&R license
Thanks Frank!
Still not aggestive but we updated our KB to reflect 'Veeam B&R Agent edition' functionality - take a lookVeeam has not announced this pretty neat licensing feature very aggressive

Re: Licensing feedback
Hi,
Thanks for this. It does seem there is some confusion around this because I did already raise a support call prior to my post to ask about this use case, and was told it did require a license for B&R. (case 02212188 - Cloud Connect and local copy)
I'll do some testing with a quick VM here at our office and see if the above works...
Thanks,
Jon
