Many missing features????

Post by BugReportGirl »

We are trying to evaluate its features, and its not looking very impressive to our CEO.
Are we seeing things, or is Veeam Agent for Windows missing even the most basic features?
We are trying (and failing) to convince him of "oh, all these things are totally unnecessary".

The ability to do simple things like "backup every 3 days" (for our seldom used machines).
From the main screen the "backup now" (and various) text is chopped off an unreadable.
The ability to delete old backups from the GUI.
The ability to do differential backups, at all????
Simple scheduling like "full backup every Friday" and "incremental backup every Tuesdays".
Backups every 10 days.
Very UNclear features like "Keep 10 days of backups (excluding days without backups)". Huh?
A progress bar that shows 100% when backups are completed 25%, 50%, 75%.
No estimated completion time.
No speed MB/sec backup info.
... and about 20 others basic things.

Either all of the above features are VERY deeply hidden... or totally missing.
Why would we switch from our current software which EASILY does all of the above?

Hi BugReportGirl

First of all, thanks for feedback, it is always great to hear about our products(especially in "Product X missing Y feature" key)!

Let me address some of those concerns raised here:
1 and 6 - "custom schedule": Backup every X days. Thing is, with schedule like "Every 3 days" you do not get a guaranteed backup on a particular day of the week. Which makes it random - this week your computer will be backed up on Monday, next week it will shift to Wednesday so on. Most people prefer "guaranteed" schedule with set days for backup, with guarantee to have restore point on Day X. Note that if you need a custom schedule that UI does not allow to configure, you can run backup via command line at times you need.
2 - "chopped off buttons": most likely some custom DPI scaling is being used. Feel free to address this one with support team.
3 - "delete old backups from the GUI": Restricted for a reason of human factor and simplicity of use. With Veeam you simply set different retention and Veeam automatically applies it after next run, clearing older restore points.
4 - "differential backups": with the amount of data changes nowadays differential backup show itself inefficient. Each restore point contains changed data from Full run, not from a previous run, whereas in Forever forward Incremental each backup represents changes since previous run. Substantial growth of restore points makes differential backup less of use with each day.
5 - "Simple scheduling like "full backup every Friday" and "incremental backup every Tuesdays": Surely possible - set Schedule to "On these days: Tuesday, Friday" as well as option to have Synthetic Full on Friday(Storage-Advanced). That will do it. Job will run twice a week, with Friday Full each week and incremental Tuesday as described.
7 - "Keep 10 days of backups (excluding days without backups)". That one is quite simple - say you have an office workstation and plan to go on vacation. Before leaving an office on Friday you have 10 daily restore points(your expected retention), you shutdown your computer and leave at ease. During 2 weeks of vacation your backups aren't running. You come back, turn on your PC and find 0 backups, because every restore point you have is more than 10 days age and thus deleted. Not good, huh? That is why we skip days without backups from counter and let you know about it. You set 10 days retention - that will be 10 actual days with backups.
8 - "A progress bar that shows 100% when backups are completed 25%, 50%, 75%" - awkward and unexpected - feel free to raise the ticket as well.
9 - "No estimated completion time" - Noted as a feature request, thanks!
10 - "No speed MB/sec backup info": it is there in the session statistics, and it is per-volume, to avoid mixing speeds from SSD C: with capacity HDD D: performance disks. Managed agents jobs also have entire job summary with total processing speed across all machines in the job.
11 - "20 others basic things" - I will be glad to hear all of them, feel free to post here or send via private message!

/Cheers!
