Restore Sophos Encrypted disk

Post by Svalbard2018 »

I am using Windows 10 with Sophos Device Encryption enabled.
I supposed this was just managed Bitlocker.
I backup with Veeam Windows Agent version 5.0.0.4301
Because of a power interruption, I ended with the PC asking the Bitlocker password at boot, but then not booting due to errors (i.e. 0xc0000225 and others).
So (to make a long story short) I booted with a usb key with Veeam restore ISO and backup.
Everything fine but:
1. I was able to restore without "Unlocking" the encrypted drive. No error from Veeam but the system was unbootable anyway.
2. If I tried to unlock the disk, Veeam failed with an error (unable to decrypt - of course the password was correct).
At the end I removed the encrypted partition and recreated it (a clean one) and finally restored and booted fine (without bitlocker anymore).
Questions are:
1. Is it fine to restore to an encrypted volume/disk ? I does not make any sense to me and I understand the manual says "the drive must be unlocked". But why does the wizard go on?
2. Is Veeam unable to unlock Sophos encrypted volumes "by design" ? I.E. because Sophos use some different technology instead of Bitlocker (even if they state they use bitlocker someway).
Thank you.

I did try another desktop with Sophos Device Encryption and Veeam Windows Agent backup.
Boot from Veeeam usb stick and it succesfully unlocked the C drive.
Thus I suppose my disk was actually badly impacted.
Anyway if I do not unlock the C drive the wizard goes on anyway. Still not undesrstanding this.

Hi Svalbard

I cannot comment on how Sophos works with disk encryption. If they leverage bitlocker, it should be supported by us. I suggest you open a support case and let our support team have a look at the logs.
