Using VeeamAgent for SQLserver like RMAN agent: feature request ?

Post by jnap »

Hello,
Is it possible to use Veeam Windows agentwith SQLserver like RMAN agent ?
RMAN agent gives the possibility to "open" a veeam repository to RMAN/Oracle and to watch RMAN Jobs in the console. Jobs are not configurable with veeam but you can just see them.

The use case is if I want to backup my SQLserver between 2 application batches, using veeam infrastructure, how is it possible easily?

RMAN agent lets oracle drives the backup... so with a classic rman script you can backup your oracle db between 2 batches and backup it into veeam infrastructure and monitore it with the VBR Console like the other VMs jobs...

Thanks!

Hello,
sounds like you are asking for a VDI plugin for SQL management studio?

If yes: that's a valid feature request

Best regards,

not at all
I just need that SQL server can backup directly to a veeam repository, like OracleRMAN Veeam agent does

Thanks

like OracleRMAN Veeam agent does
yes, that's what a VDI (Virtual Device Interface) plugin does. Do you see other option how a backup software can interact with SQL (in case my SQL knowledge is outdated)?

This is the best picture I found on the internet...

from here

It's completely different technology than how Veeam Agent for Windows (VAW) works. VAW is block based / snapshot based while RMAN / SAP backint / SQL VDI is file based.

Ok thank you and sorry i didn't know about this "VDI"
Your picture is a good representation of my use case
In this way the backup application "just" has to open its storage and SQL backup is driven by SQLserver and its DBA

So, is this a valid feature request?
