Veeam Agent For Windows Free - Recovery Boot fails somehow

Post by 4eversr »

Hi,

i have a whitebox ESXi 7.0 server at home (free ESXi) where i have running two Windows 10 guests on.
On these Win10 Guests i have installed Veeam Agent for Windows Free 5.0.3.4708 where i do ddaily backups on a NAS.

I have created a fresg veeam recovery medium today on the machine, which i want to recover to an earlier state, because an update process from another software corrupted the database.
But when i boot the veeam recovery media the veeam recovery menue never show up (with bare metal, windows recovery environment, and so on).
There is only the green background and a blank windows 10 command box with command prompt. - But no veeam recovery menue.

I can insert any commands i want, so i wonder if there is a command to manually start the veeam bare metal recovery ?
Does anybody now why that is ? (What is strange: When i do a "ipconfig" it shows no ip, although the VM has a virtual Intel E1000 nic, which drivers should be included in the recovery media also)

Hello,

That sounds like a technical issue. Please provide a support case ID for this issue, as requested when you click New Topic.
Without case number, the topic will eventually be deleted by moderators.

Can you please share your windows version with me? Are you running version 22H2? Veeam Agent for Windows Free 5.0.3.4708 had support for version 1803 up to version 21H2.
It sounds to me like a known issue if you are in the latest windows 10 version. You may try to create a recovery media with Veeam Agent for Windows v6.0 on a working machine and boot from that recovery media.

Hi, i can confirm that i am running Windows 10 22H2 on the affected machine where also the veeam recovery media was created.
So you mean when i create the veeam recovery media again, on a older windows machine with only 21H2 it will possibly work ?
Or is there a newer veeam agent free for windows which i am missing ?

Veeam Agent v5 doesn't support Windows 10 22H2. I see two options.

- Create the recovery media with Veeam Agent v5 or v6 on Windows 10 21H2.
- Create the recovery media with Veeam Agent v6 on Windows 10 22H2.
Or is there a newer veeam agent free for windows which i am missing ?
Yes, we have released the new version on February 14th which supports Windows 10 22H2.

Please download the most recent build (6.0.2.1090) from here if you want to protect a Windows 10 22H2 system.

Hi, i have fully trusted the internal update check of the Veeam Agent for Windows, which still states it is already the latest version.
Is this a bug, or what is the cause that there is a newer agent version and the local update check tells me nothing about that newer version !?

Agent autoupdate functionality gets enabled after several months of manual downloads via the website. If you need to install the latest version today please download it from the website. Thank you!

Hi Dima, i am very thankful for your fast answers and given support. I already downloaded veeam agent 6.x and will try later to create a new recovery media with that version.
I guess it will work with that boot media then, when this is a well known problem with win 10 22H2.

I also understand that veeam itself has decided to wait some months with the automatic version update. - No problems with that, too.
But i have to criticise:
When there is a newer agent version available which is also specific made for the windows build i am running, it's strange that the update check did not give me a hint about that fact, even when i do a manual update search in the agent.
I would prefer, when there would be a small info notice on 22H2 systems when you start a manual update search: "There is no automatic update option published yet, but for your windows OS build there is a newer version available for manual download on veeam.com ."
That would be better than stating "there is no newer version" even when i run a newer windows build which is not even supported on the veeam agent version installed.

You are welcome Thomas!

Please let us know how it goes!

Thank you, your idea makes total sense! Consider it noted as an improvement request!

I have encountered a critical issue while trying to recover from Veeam media on Windows 11 22h2. During the recovery process, the system displays a "datatransfer.synchdisk" error, which prevents me from proceeding further. This issue occurs when using the supposedly reliable Cloud Connect technology.

Additionally, I have experienced problems with the integration of Wasabi and AWS using the new S3 objects. When attempting to use these services, I receive an S3 error stating, "The difference between the request time and the current time is too large."

In the past, I have worked closely with Veeam's support team to resolve a Google Drive login issue, which required extensive testing and collaboration. I was hoping to find a similarly efficient solution to these current problems.

However, given the current state of the Veeam Agent for Windows, I am forced to conclude that it is not possible to establish a reliable setup using this product. I may have to consider using other software instead, but I am genuinely disappointed by my experience so far.

I hope that these issues can be addressed promptly so that the Veeam Agent for Windows can live up to the high standards we have come to expect from Veeam products. Ah, all the errors above mentioned and the list is not exhaustive, using the last version 6.02.1090.

I am wondering if this software has been properly tested, as it does not seem to be up to the high standards we have come to expect from Veeam products.
