Veeam Agent in Free mode complains about not enough licenses after update.

Post by GeraldS »

We've been using the Veeam Agent in free mode for some years now to backup a number of physical machines to our Backup & Replication repository.

After upgrading VBR to version 10 and the Agents to version 4 some of them started to show the message
Error: Not enough licenses on backup server
I found this thread, which seems related and tried some fixes mentioned there:
  • I ran .\Veeam.Backup.Manager.exe -removelicense vaw on the VBR server
  • I uninstalled the Veeam Agent
  • I removed Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows\ManagedMode from the registry with the regnulltool
  • I removed everything related to Veeam from C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile + subfolder: AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Local DB\Instances
  • I reinstalled the Veeam Agent
But as soon as I start a job or try to configure one I get the same error message again.

We were always using the Agents in free mode, they never were licenced. The aforementioned thread notes that the licences should be removed from VBR and/or enterprise manager. VBR claims that the licences are managed by the enterprise manager, but I can't find any place to remove them there.

How can I remove these licences so the Agents work again?

Hi Gerald,

Welcome to Veeam Community Forums and thanks for posting!

To clarify, are you Agents running in Agent Management mode under control of B&R server or in independently, in standalone mode?

Thanks

Hi Gerald,

Additionally, can you please tell us if you're using a mix of paid and FREE agents and what are the settings you have here down below?

Thanks!

Oh great, I spent the whole day trying to debug this problem. I even checked exactly this licencing dialog multiple times, but I didn't see that "Allow unlicensed agents to consume instances" was checked.

I unchecked it and the problem was solved.

Thank you anyway, and sorry for the trouble.
