VEEAM Products in Small Business Use

Post by fred3 »

I seem to have gotten confused somewhere regarding VEEAM products.
I started using VEEAM for Windows hardware backups one-off.
I think I'm still doing that - but with multiple licenses of 5 each for VEEAM Agent for Microsoft Windows (currently at 5.0.3.4708).
I have or had 5 licenses for Windows Server and 5 licenses for Windows Workstation.
In the end, each computer has VEEAM Agent installed and running.
We have generated and stored fresh .iso files for each.
We are attempting to complete setting up the backups.
We do not have a centralized management app set up - each computer is managed individually. (Any recommendation re: this?).
The computers are on a domain with file servers available to store backup files - but this is getting a bit wonky.
In some cases, we are saving the backup files on local USB hard drives.
In cases where there is no local USB hard drive, I'd like to use a domain file server share but this doesn't seem to work in the backup setup. ???

Hi Fred

In my opinion, storing your Veeam Agent Backups on the Domain File Server Share is a bad idea.
Think of an attacker (inside or outside), who has administrative access to the domain. It doesn't take to long to delete all backups on the domain file share and encrypt all workstations which are also joined to the domain.
Also think of a second copy of your backups. Especially for the servers. Having the current backup only on one usb drive is not a good idea. What happens, if the usb drive has an issue, and you have to restore your server? You will have a data loss.

If you still want to use the file share as a backup target, you have to configure the backup job to send the backups to a file share:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=50

If it doesn't work, please provide a case number as requested for any technical issue. This forum is run by product management and not support. So a support case is required for technical issues.
We do not have a centralized management app set up - each computer is managed individually. (Any recommendation re: this?).
With 5 Windows Server and 5 Windows Workstations, you could use Veeam Community Edition (10 licenses for free) to centralize management of your Agent Backups. It allows you to backup your server and workstations to a single backup target and create a backup copy job to the rotated usb drive. You don't have to manage 10 machines manually. But you have to use a server to install this product.

Also consider to get a Veeam Backup Essentials VUL license. In case something doesn't work, you want to have the possibility to create support cases and also get an guaranteed answer from our support. With the free edition, support is only on best effort.
With the VUL license, you can leverage Object Storage as a backup target with immutably support. Starting with Veeam V12, you wouldn't have to use USB drives anymore. Backup Files are stored immutable offsite in the cloud. Protected against unwanted deletion.

Thanks
