After upgrading a VAW instance from 5.x to the new 6.0, backups started failing with the error "Version string portion was too short or too long". When I edited the job, the error message was "Unable to obtain a Veeam Agent for Windows license from the backup server. Version string portion was too short or too long." This was odd considering the instance was setup in free mode. Though it was backing up to a repository.
There is a freshly published KB article about this problem. The fix worked for me. I thought I'd share in case others encounter this problem. Two days ago I was lost.

Re: Version string portion was too short or too long
Using free Agents against VBR repository since many many years.
Now this problem occurred for me after upgrading to VBR 12.1 (besides many other problems).
KB4421 seems to have solved the problem for now.
