volume restore on windows machine (new to this)

Post by codejoy »

I need to do a volume restore to a windows machine. I read how to do it, it seems self explanatory but I am nervous to loose my drive. I have a volume level restore and really what I need to restore is the windows drive including system program files etc. How does the veeam agent handle this while its running on the same drive? Do I need to move/re-install the veeam agent to another drive before I can perform the volume restore?

I had a user mess up something on the machine and that includes the registry. Hence the nervousness and needed to restore the volume to a known working state.
(a week ago if I have it). So just unsure of this process. I don't want to toast the windows disk if I can help it..but restoring it as was a week ago would be super helpful.

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.
How does the veeam agent handle this while its running on the same drive?
It doesn't do that. If you have to restore the operating system, then you need to use bare metal recovery. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=50 describes the process.

Best regards,

Thank you for the response! On that link there is a windows recovery environment and a bare metal. There seems to be a difference? Going with the Baremetal...this makes me have a few more questions:

I did create a recovery ISO that is safely sitting on the C: Drive (the windows drive). The machine still boots and functions fine, just restoring windows to a week ago would be helpful in fixing some woefully bad configurations issues (That did mess the registry up some).
That being said:

The veeam recovery media, is that a generic piece of media or this ISO that I built when I first setup this system for backups? If it is the ISO I built then it seems I have to copy that from the c: drive to a thumb drive and boot into that.

From there with the correct credentials and logins and network settings I can find the volumes I want to restore (being the C: drive or system volume) and then restore it?

Once the revcovery media boots and I tell it where the veeam server is, I am guessing I need to drill down to the backup name so it knows the right set of files (volumes) that I will want to restore?

If the above assumptions are correct then I might be good to go. I would like to somehow peek to see how far back the volumes go. If I only have 3 days it is not worth the recovery, but if my volumes are from the 19th or so, then I need to do this.

yes

As you have a working PC, I would create a new one to boot from an USB stick (it looks like you are talking about a PC / laptop that cannot boot from an ISO directly) https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=50
From there with the correct credentials and logins and network settings I can find the volumes I want to restore (being the C: drive or system volume) and then restore it?
yes. Step 6 https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=50 (or VBR server. You did not mention it)
I would like to somehow peek to see how far back the volumes go.
You are asking me how many days for backup you configured? You can see that in the job settings. Or click on restore on the taskbar icon and see which days the software offers for restore: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=50

I just saw that we even have a how-to section: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=50

Thank you so much answers my questions specifically and then the documentation too I can get right too. (I did log into my veeam server I guess the restore points was set to 7 and if I read that right the days goes back about 6 days with the 6th day 22nd, being a full backup). Thank you again.
