VAL 6.0.0.1060 - Failed to load module [veeamsnap]

Post by siaalien »

Hi all!

I just installed the new VAL 6.0.0.1060. Installation went smoothly, but the error in the Subject occured when I ran the backup.

Here are some details:
OS: CentOS 8.7
Kernel: 4.18.0-425.13.1.el8_7.x86_64

As https://www.veeam.com/kb2804?ad=in-text-link states, VAL 6.0.0.1060 is compatible with my kernel. But even so, running the

Code: Select all

find /lib/modules | grep veeamsnap
command, my kernel is not listed, as seen below:

Code: Select all

/lib/modules/4.18.0-305.el8.x86_64/extra/veeamsnap.ko
/lib/modules/4.18.0-425.3.1.el8.x86_64/extra/veeamsnap.ko
/lib/modules/4.18.0-193.el8.x86_64/extra/veeamsnap.ko
/lib/modules/4.18.0-240.el8.x86_64/extra/veeamsnap.ko
/lib/modules/4.18.0-372.9.1.el8.x86_64/extra/veeamsnap.ko
/lib/modules/4.18.0-80.el8.x86_64/extra/veeamsnap.ko
/lib/modules/4.18.0-348.el8.x86_64/extra/veeamsnap.ko
/lib/modules/4.18.0-147.el8.x86_64/extra/veeamsnap.ko
/lib/modules/4.18.0-425.10.1.el8_7.x86_64/extra/veeamsnap.ko
I tried booting with one of the kernels in the list (425.3.1 and 425.10.1), but to no avail...

I tried these steps too: https://www.veeam.com/kb2260.

I tried the online way https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=60, as well as offline https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=60.

Also, I tried to deploy the Agent using Veeam Backup and Replication 12. Here is another story:
  • I tried configuring a backup using the VBR Community Edition. It failed with an error stating the OS is not supported.
  • I got a trial key, and tried again. The backup failed again - could not connect to the agent. This was strage, because VBR deployed the agent itself.
Is there something I am missing?

I did not open a support case, as I am not a paying customer, and all my previous attempts failed because of that.

Thank you!

Hi Lucian

Where do you see that CentOS 8.7 is compatible with Veeam Agent for Linux 6? We support only CentOS 7.0: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=60

And I cannot find version 8.7 of CentOS. I believe 8.5 was the last version released.

Hi Fabian,

You are right! The link you quoted states that only CentOS 7 is supported.

On the other hand, I took my information from this link https://www.veeam.com/kb2804?ad=in-text-link. Here, under "Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)/CentOS", there is version 8.0-8.7 with kernel 4.18.0-425.13.1.el8_7. This is why I presumed that AlmaLinux 8.7 (again, you are right - it is not CentOS 8.7!), would be compatible with Veeam Agent for Linux.

Is there a way to make this work? Is or will AlmaLinux be supported in the near future?

Thank you!

Best regards,
Lucian

Hi Lucian

Alma Linux is not yet compatible. One of our forum member posted a workaround in this topic (Feature Request Topic for official Alma Support):

Please also read the statement from Pavel before using the workaround:

Hi Fabian,

Thank you for your answer. Starting from the resources you provided, I found a solution that seems to work so far.
https://docs.serversaustralia.com.au/do ... lmalinux-8

I tested this both in a AlmaLinux 8.7 Virtual Machine, as well as a live server with cPanel. I also tested the restore procedure using Veeam Recovery Media.

I will be waiting for an officialy supported solution, as this one is a workaround.

Thank you!

All the best,
Lucian
