Windows Agent quick, Linux Agent slow

Post by ferrus »

After a successful migration of our VM Exchange servers, from B&R to Windows Agents backups, I've been trialling three of our Linux VMs, to the Linux Agent.
They're much less used in terms of resources - basically passive NFS stores for a lot of Oracle data.

Unfortunately I still haven't been able to get a valid backup of the servers. The speed of the Linux Agent backup is tremendously slow.
By comparison:

Code: Select all

Windows Agent Average performance & Bottleneck stats: (Windows 2016, Exchange VM)

110 MB/s (vdisk avg)
Source 3%, Proxy 0%, Network 0%, Target 0%

Linux Agent Current performance & Bottleneck stats: (CentOS 7, File server VM)

3 MB/s (vdisk avg)
Source 91%, Proxy 61%, Network 0%, Target 17%

The network is 10Gbps UCS FCoE, I'm confident that's not the issue.
All VMs are hosted on the same ESX6.5 infrastructure, backing up to the same physical Veeam servers.

Is there anywhere I can look for further bottlenecks/tuning tips, before opening a support call?

Hi,

Was that volume-level or file-level backup?

Thanks!

Volume level - whole computer.

I've doubled the CPU and trebled the memory, just in case they would increase performance. It didn't.

The guest disks are LVM XFS, no encryption.

After almost 60 hours, the smallest of the three VMs I was trialling the Agent backup on, failed with the error - "Veeam.Backup.SSH.CSsh.TImeout.Exception'

Provided that the distro that you use is supported, I'd recommend you to contact support team for investigation. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 60 hours for large file-level job, but since this is a volume-level, you should definitely let our techs to take a look at the system.

Thanks!

Hi,

Did you find a solution for Linux Agent slow performance? I have the same issue here..

Windows Agent - 700 MB/s
Linux Agent - 40 MB/s

These two VMs run on the same environment, same hypervisor, same physical host, etc..

@dmontagna,

What are your job settings (file/volume/snpashot-less?) and bottleneck stats?

Also please open a support case and post your case ID - performance issues are usually not easy to resolve without looking into a job log.

Thanks!
