Exporting Files from an S3 Backup Repository Copy to Local Disk

Post by zordiryan »

Hell All,

I am quite stuck trying to do something I thought would be simple. Our company acquired the data from another business in purchasing their IP and assets. Their outgoing IT group provided us with a Veeam "backup" of their Sharepoint site as a way of transferring the site contents to us. The backup is stored on an AWS S3 bucket we now have, and as near as I can tell is structured as a Veeam Backup Object Storage Repository (has a folder structure like "/Veeam/Backup365/Backups/" and a folder for "RepositoryLock").

What I need to do is simple, we need to somehow load this backup and copy the file directory out of it to either S3 or local disk (we plan to migrate it to Google Drive). I thought this guide described the process I would need to follow, but the steps shown there haven't been working for me. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=70.

I've gotten as far as adding an object storage item under Backup Infrastructure tab using an AWS access key with permissions for the bucket with the backup, then adding a Backup Repository object storage team and synchronizing it. But from there the "Explore" option is grayed out, do I need to set up an organization or a new Backup Proxy to be able to view it and browse files? Sorry, I'm a completely new user of Veeam with no prior experience.

Any tips or guidance? Thanks!

Hello Ryan

The explore button is for retrieved backups on Archive repositories (Azure Archiv Storage, AWS Glacier).
In my understanding, you have standard AWS S3 bucket.

To access the backups on the buckets, you must follow this steps (I believe Step 1-3 are already done by you):

1.) Add the bucket as object storage to the VB365 server: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=70
2.) Add a new repository with the object storage: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=70
3.) Synchronize it: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=70

4.) IMPORTANT: Add the original M365 organization to the VB365 server: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=70
5.) Start a restore session with right click on your organization: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=70
6.) Safe your SharePoint Site as files/or zip: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=70

Please note, you can only restore from an object storage repository if the original M365 Tenant still exists and is configured on the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 server.
Additionally, restore as Files/Zips may take a long time. And you need to upload it again to Google Drive. I don't know how much data and the amount of files you have. it will take time for thousands or more files. Or SharePoint Sites with hundreds GB of data.

If the tenant with the data still exists, I suggest to research Migration tools which can migrate data from Microsoft 365 directly to Google Drive.

Best,
Fabian
