Office 365 backup license query

Post by Zach123 »

Hi Team

We have a tenant who is licensed to backup around 400 users using VBO365.

Once a year they order temporary Microsoft CSP licensing ( around 1200+ ) that are removed immediately after a couple of months.

Is there a way to backup these temporary users without purchasing the additional license?

If buying additional license is the only option, Can someone confirm if they just have to buy it once as, after 31 days of no backup, the license will be automatically released and can be used for another set of temporary users which will be added next year?

Hi Zaki,

VBO doesn't offer any temporary licenses, your tenant will need to purchase the additional count. And if a user is not backed up for 31 days, their VBO license will be revoked automatically and can be reused.

Thanks!

What happens when the user license is revoked in OFFICE365 for a user or the user is deleted, does it also delete the associated backups for those users after 31 days. Or if the backup is still retained as per retention policy.

The license is automatically revoked, however the backup is still retained as per retention policy.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

Just a question in continuation to above.

So, let's say we have 100 MS Office 365 Licenses and therefore we purchase 100 VBO365 licenses. Now, at the end of each month, 20 existing users are deleted and another 20 new users are added in MSOffice.

Does it mean we need to purchase 120 users in VBO365 as it will take 31 days to revoke the license from 20 deleted users?

If yes, doesn't that mean we will be paying for 20 additional licenses in the VBO365 event though we are not backing up more than 100 users at any given point in time?

Yes, you have to wait 31 days before the licenses are revoked automatically. The only way to free up the license before that 31 days is to remove all backuped data from the repo.

With 100 VBO Licenses you can exceed the license count by 10 licenses. This will help you with at least 10 new users.
