Quick question regarding Sharepoint "Deleted Items"

Post by ryan_gcits »

Hello. I am just looking for clarification on SharePoint Document Library backups. Are deleted items captured by the backup if they are created and then deleted within the same day?

e.g. Job runs daily at 7pm
user creates word doc in SP doc library at 9am.
user deletes that same word doc at 10am.
backup runs at 7pm that evening.

Will the document exist in the Veeam backup in any way?

I was reading the vbo considerations article here https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=60
It mentions "SharePoint site collection recycle bin is not supported for backup." however I'm not sure if the SP "first stage" recycle bin is backed up?

Hi Ryan

The file must exist on the SharePoint site when the backup job starts/runs, or it will not be backed up.
Recycle Bins cannot be backed up by us.

Thanks

Hello Mildur! Thanks for your reply :)

I was searching the forums yesterday and found another post from September 2017 where someone asked a similar question. The response they got indicates that it would pick up items that have been deleted, as long as they were still in "deleted items" in SharePoint. Link to forum post here:
veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-f47/a-fe ... 45564.html

I'm just setting SharePoint backups up for a customer and need to be clear to them what is protected. Are you confident a deleted item, even if still in the "deleted items" of SharePoint will not be backed up? If that's the case there's a big window for files to be created and disappear between backup schedules. I want to be confident when I tell the customer one way or the other.

Thank you again for your help!

Your welcome.
Let me check again in my lab to be sure.
I‘m out of office until tomorrow, so I can‘t try it today.

Thanks

Hi Ryan

Checked again and the link you posted. Mike is answering especially for Exchange Online items. If you delete a file from a document library, it goes to the recycle bin which we can't protect. The option "show items that have been deleted by user" will show you items which the user has deleted before the specified date. This items must be already been protected by another run of the backup jobs.
If that's the case there's a big window for files to be created and disappear between backup schedules.
It's like a windows file server. If you do backups all 4 hours, only the files which exists at the time of the backup will be protected. If the file gets created and deleted within this four hours, we can't protect it.
