SharePoint backup speed / throttling
Hi there,
Just wondering if there is anything in particular we can do to reduce the 365 throttling on SharePoint backups. I see there is a support article for EWS throttling but not much for SP.
https://www.veeam.com/kb4198
We have a client whose last backup stats were approx 83hrs to move 90GB, this is an incremental for one SharePoint site that we have split out to a separate job so it's duration does not affect other backups of the same tenant.
Processing rate: 591 KB/s (20 items/s)
Duration: 83:35:55
Bottleneck: Source
Read rate: 0 B/s
Write rate 6.9 MB/s
Transferred: 90.8GB (85128 items)
We also have a Veeam case open but have not come to any solution yet #05350264
Currently using modern auth and a number of additional backup applications as suggested by Veeam support although the veeam best practice article suggest not using multiple backup applications for SharePoint backups.
Currently running v5 but will be upgrading to v6 - have their been any improvements in v6 that might help?
There is mention of decorating traffic in this Microsoft article but I'm not sure if this is something Veeam do?
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharep ... int-online
Thanks

Re: SharePoint backup speed / throttling
Looks like a throttling issue, my backups were taking 5+ hours now reduced to 1 after adding more backup accounts.

Re: SharePoint backup speed / throttling
We are using decorating traffic already for a few versions (I believe starting from v2 but not 100% sure anymore when it was introduced)
There are indeed some improvements in v6, but it might be best at this point in time to wait another week or so until we release CP1 with additional hotfixes and patches.
For the backup applications. We will need to deprecate that at a certain point in time, but for now the speed we can get from MSFT Graph API's is not what I like so I hope to see that improved in the future

Re: SharePoint backup speed / throttling
Any idea if that CP1 release is any closer?
Supports latest response to us "Please, lets allow it to run for a few weeks and monitor to see if its run time decreases" is not really acceptable for us.
I'm starting to think this isn't the best solution for backing up our 365 clients.
