Is this fixed in v5?

We have our mailboxed on prem and do still not see 1:1 conversations in Teams Explorer or the mailboxes in Exchange Explorer.

Teams Chats will be backuped with the new teams Backup.
1:1 chats are not possible.

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... ?ver=50#bp
Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 does not back up the following Microsoft Teams objects:
  • Private channels
  • One-on-one chats
  • Audio and video calls
  • Video recordings
  • Contacts
  • Calendar: information about meetings and meeting chats
  • Code snippets in posts
  • Banner notifications in posts
  • Data of applications added as channel tab
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... r=50#teams
When you add an object of this type to a backup job, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 backs up the following objects:
  • Team Chat folder of the group mailbox that belongs to the Office 365 group associated with the backed-up team.
  • Document library of the SharePoint team site.
  • Team metadata: settings of the team, information about team members, channels, tabs, applications, and so on.

@mkretzer

For on-premises users, Microsoft creates hidden cloud mailboxes to archive Teams messages, and there're no APIs to access their content directly.

When you do Exchange backup with v5 for cloud users, Teams 1-2-1 messages are presented in the TeamsMessagesData folder.

I am a bit confused here. The MS Articel you posted backs up your statement about about beeing able to restore Cloud Users Teams Chat (this incluse 1-1, right?)

However, the Veeam KB says its not possible:
Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 does not back up the following Microsoft Teams objects:
Private channels
One-on-one chats

@PariPari

You mix two different backup scenarios and this is where your confusion comes from.

You can add Teams to a backup job, and this will allow you to protect a team, all conversations within this team (i.e. conversations that happen in a group chat), all channels, tabs, files, and settings of this team. And also you will be able to restore all this data back by using Veeam Explorer for Teams. But 1-2-1 chats are not part of this. And to protect those, you can use a workaround and back up user A mailbox and user B mailbox and get their 1-2-1 chats protected as mail messages (which can be restored back to a mailbox but not to Teams).

Makes sense?

@Bendios
The issue is resolved in version 5. When you do a mailbox backup and browse it with Veeam Explorer for Exchange, you'll see the new TeamsMessagesData folder with the items from Teams chat.

@Polina
Got it. But the 1-1 Chat Folder Restore is only true for pure Cloud Users, not Hybrid Users - correct?

Yes, that's correct. We can't access hidden/shadow mailboxes that are used for hybrid (on-prem) users.

Hi There,

Just doing an implementation VBO v6. Is this still the case that Veeam cannot surface the hidden/shadow mailboxes due to lack of API from Microsoft, or do you have some great news for me? :)

No, no good news I'm afraid. But quick question. If you would be able to restore chats, where would be your first thought to go to restore them... To the Explorer for teams, or to the explorer for Exchange and select the user? Or even somewhere else?

as it's about restoring Teams chats I'd say Explorer for Teams would be the natural way to go.
