Veeam for Microsoft 365

Post by mwhiteAvertium »

We are in the process of setting up Veeam for 365 and are looking at 2 options.

Option A - Azure Appliance Deployment - and Azure Blob. (Concerned about Cost).
Option B - Local Vmware Deployment - Azure Blob repository - (Concerned about bandwidth)

If we deploy in Azure, is 8 core 16gb the minimum compute requirements? we only have about 270 users; not thousands.

If we deploy locally with Azure blob for M365 backup storage, will it take a lot of local bandwidth, or does it go straight from M365 to Azure blob bypassing local server?

Hi Michael,

Option A should give you the best backup performance.
Note that data goes from the source to the backup repository via your backup proxy. For example, if you have an all-in-one on-premises installation, the data will go from M365 to an on-prem proxy and then to Azure Blob.

8 core and 16GB RAM is the minimum if you're also going to use the self-service portal for restoring data. At the same time, 8 core/32GB RAM is the recommended sizing. You can check out this guide to get more information on VB365 sizing: https://bp.veeam.com/vbo/guide/design/maxconfig.html

Thank you. Can the proxy and backup server be on the same device?

Yes the proxy and backup server roles can be on the same server but it is highly recommended to split them to two servers for each role.

Chris is absolutely correct - proxies are resource-intensive during backup operations and we recommend placing them on a dedicated host.

Thank you, So, if you have the backup server locally and the proxy in Azure, will it work efficiently that way?

Yes, it should work efficiently and the best it can. There will be the network connection from the on-site backup server to the Proxy in Azure and back again, whereas if the Proxy was on-site the backup server connects to it on the same network and then it retrieves the 365 data from the Cloud.

Thanks. We are going to backup to an azure blob. don't want to pay out the nose for server infrastructure, but don't want to send data here, and then there either. As long as putting the proxy in Azure will take the data straight from o365 to proxy to azure blob, I'm happy. Just don't want it to come onsite first.

Then you should be good with that plan. Best of luck.
