Veeam O365 bqckup to tape

Post by handian.sudianto »

Hello,
Can Veeam for Microsoft 365 backup directly to the tape, or should backup to disk first?

Hi Handian

Please use the search function of our forum. The question was asked multiple times :)

To answer your question: No, tape is not a supported target for backup or backup copy jobs. And there is no Backup to Tape job in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.

There are workarounds if you have non-object storage repositories for Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365. Please check out our existing topics for those workarounds (leveraging Backup to Tape or File to Tape job in VBR):
- post509240.html?hilit=tape#p509240
- post508463.html?hilit=tape#p508463
- post504498.html?hilit=tape#p504498
- post501976.html?hilit=tape#p501976
- post501280.html?hilit=tape#p501280
- post486380.html?hilit=tape#p486380

For object storage repositories, writing those backups to tapes is not possible. Use a backup copy job to archive object storage (Azure or AWS) for long time archival of your backups.

Re: Veeam O365 backup to tape

Hi Fabian,

I already read other post but still confuse since i'm on designing the solution for our company. Please confirm is my though is right or not :
Currently i need to keep retention for M365 at least for 5 years but must consider the cost, so below is my solutions :
1. Buy Veeam M365 as SaaS on Azure with unlimited storage.
2. Buy Veeam M365 software on Azure and create separate azure blob storage.
3. Buy Veeam M365 on-prem version and store to tape.

option 1 we will have long retention since we will have unlimited storage but have higher cost.
option 2 we still calculate how big the storage needed to keep retention at least for 5 years, hopefully the price will be more cheaper than option 1
option 3, since we have unused tape cartridge the cost will be cheaper i still looking how we can use the tape to store the backup. But from your information this option is can't be chosen due the tape is not supported on veeam M365.

Please share your thought what the best way to have long retention but minimize the cost.

Understood.
May I ask how large your source environment is? Are we talking about multiple Terabytes?

Option 2: You can use a backup job to Azure Blob (or any other supported object storage target) and keep your data for 1 month. Then use a backup copy job to Azure Archive Storage for long time archival of your backups. Keep your backups on Azure Archive for 5 years. Storage costs for Azure Archive Storage is cheaper than in Azure Blob.

Option 3: Backups can be written to tape with Veeam Backup & Replication if you use local disk repositories (jet db based repository) in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365. Local disk repositories are not recommended for larger deployments or service providers.
We strongly recommend to use object storage based repositories. All new v8 features around Proxy Pools (better scalability for your backup infrastructure) and Primary Backup immutability will only be available for object storage repository.

I recommend to compare prices for Option 1 + 2.

Hi Fabian,
Thanks for your recomendation, currently we still ask same thing to the distributor for cost comparation.
Total storage for my office 365 around 80TB, the biggest part is sharepoint which consume around 70TB.
For option no 3, it is possible if the scenario is :
- Office 365 retention is 7 days on the onprem VM
- This VM backuped by VBR to the disk for 7 days
- The VBR have second copy to the tape with retention 5 years?

Hi Handian

Is tape a "must use" business requirement for your organization?
For 80 TB, I definitely do recommend to go with object storage based repositories and use backup copy jobs. Object storage repositories are more stable and provide backup compression (Exchange up to 40% - 50%, Sharepoint up to 10% - 30%).

Yes, it's possible. But I recommend to keep Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 retention for at least 30 days or so.
Let's assume the following scenario: A user deletes an item and he comes to you for a restore 2 weeks after the deletion. That item is not anymore in the VB365 backup and not anymore in the VBR backups. You have to get it from the tape.
Restoring that data will involve the following steps:
1.) Restore the entire VB365 VM (80TB size!) to the production environment or backup files to the Backup Repository
2.) Start the VB365 VM in an isolated network or open the explorer directly from the backup files
3.) Restore the item the user has requested.

Do you have 70TB storage available for this staged restore? On your hypervisor datastore or backup repository?
Also consider the time to recover 80TB from tape, before you can recover a single item from a SharePoint site, Mailbox or OneDrive.

Best,
