Backup for Microsoft Azure Free Edition and Essentials

Hello,

Is it possible to install Veaam Backup Essentials edition on the same virtual appliance as Backup for Microsoft Azure Free Edition?
I would like to use Veeam Backup for Azure to backup Azure virtual machines and use Backup Essentials to protect physical servers on premise.

Second question:

I have Microsoft SQL server running on Azure VM, does it Veeam Backup for Azure Free Edition allows SQL differential backup?

Hi Irek,

No, these two cannot be combined on the same machine, as Veeam Backup for Azure is running Linux OS and Veeam Backup Essentials can only be deployed in the Windows box.

With Veeam Backup for Azure you can do incremental runs after creating a full backup > Backup Chains

Does it Veaam Backup Essentials is a good choice if we want to protect MS Windows VMs in Azure and MS Windows physical servers on premise?

I would like to to backup physical servers to local NAS and then to the cloud.
Azure VMs backups would go to Azure Blob storage in two regions.

Can I install just one Veeam Server (as part of Veaam Backup Essentials) in Azure and manage all backups from there or I need something on premise?

We have site-to-site connection with Azure. Looks like Veeam Backup for Azure is is the way forward to protect our Azure infrastructure.

I would like to avoid setting-up Veeam server on premise to protect physical machines, with the Azure site-to-site connection I can set-up VM in the cloud and join to local domain - my question is, does it backup data goes first to the backup server and then to destination storage, or it goes straight from the protected device to destination storage? I would like to avoid sending a lot of GB from machines on premise to Veeam server in cloud and back to the local NAS.

This is not possible now. This would require integration with VBR.


On backing up over the site-to-site connection. We will require a scale-out backup repository (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100). We leverage a performance and capacity tier (which can be azure blob - https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100). This means data from your physical servers will land on the performance tier and then move /copy to the capacity tier.

There is nothing wrong with it but it will require additional storage before you can send it to Azure Blob. Deeper integration with databases is on the roadmap for VBA but no ETA for now.

For licensing and pricing, I suggest you work with your local Veeam team. Essentials is aimed at SMB so depending on your size, it will be enough. Essentials is as far as I remember available in the 3 editions.

Even when the Azure to OnPremise is connected with the ExpressRoute circuit, when we store the backup from Azure to OnPremise Repository or Tape Drive, do we get charged for the Egress traffic?
