[MERGED] SureBackup using backup copy jobs as source
Hello,
I'm a bit suprise to see that it's not possible to create SureBackup jobs using backup copy jobs as source, I'm aware that Backup Copy job has built-in integrity check that ensure the copy is bit-identical, so there is no need to perform full recovery verification of copied backups again, but I think that this option should be present anyway to have an extra health verification step.
@VeeamDEV : can you take in account to add this feature on V12 ?
Thank you.

Just to set a proper expectation - this feature is not planned for v12. However, we appreciate your feedback; it's been noted. Thanks!

Re: Add a Backup Copy Job in the SureBackup job
As our Backup Copies are our OffSite Last Line of Defense... I consider it crucial to verify them... so we periodically do VM Restores (on a different HV-Host) from them. It is a time-consuming PITA but I know of no other way to really be Sure Sure that they’ll work if & when they’re needed. IMO this is the greatest (and perhaps only serious) shortcoming of VBR.

This is possible with Veeam Orchestrator.

[MERGED] Verifying/Testing Backup Copy Jobs
We have our backups transported to a secondary repository using backup copy jobs. From what I understand, Surebackup cannot verify backups on a backup copy job. I did see there was an unsupported work around for this. But, personally, I don't like to use unsupported methods.
We do have health checks scheduled for the actual copy job and monthly health checks for the backup copy jobs. I know everyone says "The backup isn't a backup unless you restore it". But, my question is, are health checks sufficient enough to verify that the backup copy job can be restored successfully?
Are there any best practices/supported methods to verify that the backup copy jobs are valid and usable backups?

Re: Add a Backup Copy Job in the SureBackup job
Hello,
I merged your question to one of the existing threads.
Health checks ensure that the data is valid (no bit-rot). It cannot ensure that there are logical issues like "kernel panic / bluescreen at boot". The best practice is to run surebackup against the backup job and health checks against the copy job
Best regards,
Hannes

Re: Add a Backup Copy Job in the SureBackup job
@HannesK, thanks for the info. That is what we are doing now (surebackup on the backup job and heath checks on the copies).
Do you ever foresee being able to run the backups from copy jobs in Sureback in the future? Or is that something that is technically not possible?

it's technically possible, but we cannot provide a timeline when this could happen. But we count your request +1

Re: Add a Backup Copy Job in the SureBackup job
Hello,
I am also surprised that SureBackup does not work with CopyJobs. I just had to find out with Veeam support. We have a cloud backup server + disaster recovery test server in the data center. The plan was that SureBackups could be set up here for automated testing. We are talking about 30+ tenants here.... But unfortunately this does not work.. There are no workarounds for this either....

Hello,
I guess https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vdro/ ... opy&ver=60 should be a good start

Re: Add a Backup Copy Job in the SureBackup job
I am aware that VDRO is able to use copied backups for its testing, but VDRO is much more than just simple and high-level recoverability checks.
So, please count my request for allowing SureBackup to use copy jobs as a source as well.
With the optimisations of the SureBackup feature done within the recent VBR releases, having the option to use copied backup chains for recoverability testing would be awesome!
By the way:
Importing a backup file from a copy job will allow to use the imported backup within a SureBackup job.
This is clearly inconvenient, but it shows that the limitation is probably less related to technical restrictions as already pointed out.

[MERGED] [ER] Ability to link SureBackup to Backup Copy Jobs
When setting up a SureBackup job it would be very helpful to be able to specify a Backup Copy Job as the linked job. For example run SB on UK HV using the copy of the USA backups which has been BCJ'd to the UK.

Thanks Fabian. I did know about this thread, but I think the cache in my mind overflowed and expunged the knowledge to preserve some sanity.

Re: Add a Backup Copy Job in the SureBackup job
Is there any workaround for this?
We need to set up
UK Backup -> BCJ -> USA Repo -> SureBackup
USA Backup -> BCJ -> UK Repo -> SureBackup
Would
UK Backup -> BCJ -> USA Repo -> replica in USA -> SureBackup
USA Backup -> BCJ -> UK Repo -> replica in UK -> SureBackup
work as expected?
Thanks

Re: Add a Backup Copy Job in the SureBackup job
Hello,
yes, that looks good. The replica is a "primary job" and that's why it would work.
Best regards,
Hannes
