Adding storage to SOBR

Post by jcofin13 »

Situation:
Single extent sobr with hardnened repo
data locality on.

The single extent is getting full and you add a second extent via another hardened repo.

When will you see that second extent start to be consumed?

Will it wait until the first extent fills up and then spill over to the 2nd one?

Or

Will it start writing to the second extent after the next synthetic full is run (where it starts a new chain)?

With data locality on it would seem it would wait and want to keep everyhting 100% together on the same extent no matter if it sees more space in an additional extent or not.

Can anyone clarify how adding additional storage to an existing sobr gets consumed?
On a long enough time line it seems like it would balance out across both extents as retention phases out and newer jobs are ran.

Hello,
When will you see that second extent start to be consumed?
as long as there is some free space, it will keep the chain on one extent. It starts using the new extent with new machines or active full backup. The user guide has more details on that.
Will it start writing to the second extent after the next synthetic full is run (where it starts a new chain)?
assuming that you follow the recommendation and you have XFS, that would be a bad idea. Because that would mean a lot of wasted disk space. If you have no XFS, then yes.

Thanks for the reply. I read through the user guide. Does it treat a synthetic full the same as an active in that when that it is created it would create the new chain on the new extent if it sees more free space there at that time? Clearly incrementals dont start to consume the storage as several have run and the new extent still hasnt gotten used at all.

Ive just added a new large extent and need to know how to rebalance it if it isnt automatic. I have had to add the additional extent to the sobr so i dont run out of space. Its getting quite full.

Yes ...its xfs with data locality as the policy.

Synthetics land intentionally on the same extent when using XFS or ReFS to retain the savings of spaceless fulls
