Backup Copy as protection against Ransomware

Post by diamlemos »

Hi,

I backup my VMs to a Synology NAS, which is not joined to my Active Directory.
I have 2 external USB HDDs, I plan to add and a third HDD, in which I "Backup Copy" the backup jobs.
I have used the option "This repository is backed by rotated hard drives".
With this scenario I have always one Hard Drive with all the critical VMs disconnected from any computer.

Is that a good protection against Ransomware?

Hello Charidimos

Welcome to the forum.
Yes, it will protect your backups from ransomware attacks. Just do not forget to disconnect USB HDD from the backup server.
For automatic protection without manual intervention I recommend to check out cloud Object Storage with immutability support or a Veeam Cloud Connect Service provider. They don't require additional server hardware on your site.

Best,

Hello Fabian,

Thank you for your prompt reply.
It is not possible for me to use cloud Object Storage with immutability support or a Veeam Cloud Connect Service provider now but I will use one of these technologies as soon as it possible.
