Backup Copy copied entire server not individual HDD

Post by Wocka »

Hello,

I have a Backup Copy job that created an off-site copy of the entire server and not the individaul HDD that I had selected.

Let me explain what I'm trying to do. My Veeam software in supplied as SAAS, I don't have enough repository space in my off-site location for the server to perform an off-site Backup Copy job of the entire server.

I have a forward incremental backup job backing up to a local repository in my server room.
Server A = 1.3Tb is size.
Full backup creates a 918GB .vbk file
Windows 2008 R2 with 5 drives

I created a second Backup Job for Server A. Selected only the 1 drive (drive 5) that I must have for DR as the data is not anywhere else. I figured I could rebuild the server easily enough and then restore this core data.

Forward incremental backup job for Drive 5 only backing up to a local repository in my server room.
Drive = 450GB
Drive Space Used = 377GB
Full backup creates a 290GB .vbk file
I have this set to 7 restore points (7 days, as I backup once a day) with a Synthetic full every Saturday.

I then created a Backup Copy job and added "From Backups" the backup job name of the individual drive only.
Under Virtual Machines / objects to process it shows the size of the task to be 450GB = correct.

The job filled the off-site repository with a 612GB file. This seed took about 10 days to get across the WAN link.

Looking at the Copy Job it shows that it is taking the entire 1.3TB server and not my individual HDD.

Why is the Backup copy Job copying the entire server across and not just Drive 5? Can anyone sugest what I'm doing wrong.

Somewhat confusingly, 'from backups' does not actually specify the source backup, it merely is a way of specifying the VM ID, and the job will search all available backups for that VM ID and select the latest one. To specify only a specific job, select 'from jobs'.

This is more or less explained on this page of the user guide.
