Backup Copy job for two Backup jobs with excluded disks

Post by omfk »

Hi all,

for our file server I have two backup jobs configured. One is covering the productive data (2 vhdx) and the other one covers the archive data (1 additonal vhdx).

I have now also cobfigured a backup copy job which has as source the two backup jobs.
The object window of the backup copy job looks as follows:
Archive data 2,36TB
Prod data 3,6TB

Total site: 2,82TB

The backup copy job also only transfers 2.9TB.

Do I have to configure differently?

Hi Frank, with such a setup (two source jobs backing up the same VM) the backup copy will fairly consider that it has to backup only one of those (as it tracks the VMs by their IDs and doesn't know about excluded disks) and just take the most recent backup as a source.

Hi Alexander,

understood. So I'll have to create different backup copy jobs as well?

Correct, but think in advance regarding the restore procedure (VM disks will be split among two backup copy jobs) and even better test it beforehand. Thanks!

Right, splitting the disks into several jobs is not recommended from FLR perspective.

So far, I have only tested a "File restore" and that worked fine with both the backup files from the backup and also the backup copy job. The Backup which only contains a single chdx holds "only" achive data. This seperation was done as I don't need a backup of this data every x hours. And when I have to restore the file server completely a later restore of these data (will grow over time) will not influence the restore of the productive data part.

Then splitting is acceptable in your restore scenario but we should have warned you anyway. ;)
