Backup Copy Job - Scheduling

Post by adrian138 »

Hi there,

I have a Backup Copy Job with the following setting:

- Copy every 8 Days 09.00
- Target (Weekly Backup, 4 (Monday), Monthly 2)

- Data Transfer = direct
- Schedule any time

If i look at the Copy Report - it always Copies on Sunday instead of Monday.
Why is this?

Kind regards, Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Can you provide a bit more information:
1. What value you've set in a simple retention of backup copy job?
2. Which method have you selected for full backup creation Synthetic or Active Full?
3. What's the goal you're trying to achieve?

Hi,

1. Retention is:
- Weekly 4 (Monday)
- Monthly 2
2. Create Synthetic Full Backups - Saturday
2. Active Full Monthly Last Saturday
3. The Backupjob should be gone through on Monday so i can write it down to tape on Tuesday

Thanks alot!

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear enough in my questions.

1. I would like to know how many restore points to keep, you've set for the backup copy job in the Target menu here.
2. The method for GFS restore point creation depends on the check-box called "Read the entire restore point from source instead of synthesizing it from increments" in the Target menu.

Also, can you provide details of the source backup job (schedule, restore points to keep). Thanks!

You can set interval to 7 days and start the backup copy job on Monday (or click Sync Now on Monday after settings were changed).
Restore points to keep should be 2 to speed up GFS restore point creation starting from week 3 (since those RPs will be produced after the injection of increment into full backup file).

Hi Adrian,

Take a look at the KB here with animation for better understanding on how the GFS restore points creating.
Choosing day for GFS restore point doesn't mean it will be created on Friday, for example, it means that the desired state of machines in RP should be as close as possible to the Friday.
Plenty of useful information you can find in the big thread about GFS retention policy.
Do not hesitate to ask additional questions. Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for your information.

I want to use Backupcopy to copy the latest Fullbackup to a Remotesite and write afterwards to tape.
So Backupcopy GFS is not really necessary, right?

Kind regards, Adrian

You're right.
The major thing about the backup copy job is that it doesn't copy backups as most of people think at first, it creates a separate backup chain by using the data blocks from within source backup files.

Last question:

My Goal would be this:

Whats the Best Practice with BackupCopy Job and GFS?

BackuptoDisk: everyday
Retention: as much as i can (faster restore)

BackupCopy: every week: sunday
Retention: ? (Best Practice?)

BackuptoTape: every week (Monday)

Thanks alot, Adrian

Hi,

The best practice is to have a separate backup chain in the offsite, thus the recommended approach is to set interval of BCJ to daily.
However, you can set the interval to 7 (start BCJ on Sunday) with the retention 2 (as I've mentioned in the post above, it allows to speed up GFS point creation). This way you will get the first GFS restore point on week 3 when the number of RPs will be exceeded. Thanks!
