Backup to internal hdd and rdx full + incremental
hello,
i try different settings but nothing works
my setup:
full backup ~2TB data (1 server with 5 vms)
2 rdx drives with 5tb space
5 rdx drives with 1tb space
suggestion for the backup:
full backup once time in a week, to the internal hdd and rdx drives (5tb)
incremental backup daily to the internal hdd and rdx drives (1tb)
what is working:
backup to the internal hdd without any errors works create this is the daily backup job, incremental backup works as well, yesterday only 40gb was copied.
Backup to the rdx drives, is not as incremental backup working. Backup to the 5tb rdx drives is working, but if i insert the small rdx drives veeam try to backup the full backup => out of space
what i try:
first time i create the primary job to backup trough rdx tape,
and the backup copy job was the backup to the internal hdd
my second try was to swap the jobs, but the result was the same.
thanks for your help!

Re: Backup to internal hdd and rdx full + incremental
By default Veeam will check if existing backup files are there and will not start the processing if they are not present.
The changeable media repository setting will disable this. If the latest backup files are not present on the changeable media (your RDX), then we will create a new backup chain on it and therefore will store a new full on the media.

Hello,
i enable the option:
- This repository is backed by rotated drives.
But the result is the same always the full backup @rdx drives
greetings

Re: Backup to internal hdd and rdx full + incremental
If you want to rotate the rdx media, then this option is needed.
But each time you rotate the rdx media, there will be a new full. You cannot avoid that. There isn‘t a option, to only backup an increment to a new rdx media. Each media requires a new fullbackup before a increment will be written to it.

Re: Backup to internal hdd and rdx full + incremental
Hello,
thanks for the reply.
=> the size from every storage media drive, must be larger than the fullbackup storage size. (rdx)
=> the idea fullbackup to large drive and incremental backup at the small drives, does not work with veeam
==> the solution: i will swap both large medias daily, and forget the small medias
thanks a lot for the answers, and support

Re: Backup to internal hdd and rdx full + incremental
Hello,
i ve the next problem.
all three drives have meanwhile an full backup job done.
i thought the next backup after an full backup is an incremental backup,
but i get the following error:
12.07.2021 21:32:41 :: Failed to pre-process the job Error: Rotated drive was changed, restarting backup copy job
==> if the drive is changed, the backup job is always an full backup, and not an incremental?
===> i cant do an incremental backup, with swaping the drive?
thanks a lot for the answers!

I told you that already.==> if the drive is changed, the backup job is always an full backup, and not an incremental?

See my post from "02 Jul 2021, 12:29":
But each time you rotate the rdx media, there will be a new full.

Re: Backup to internal hdd and rdx full + incremental
Hi Mildur,
yes thanks, you told me that.
but i thought if veeam find "the old backup" he do an incremental job.
sorry for my repeated demand

Re: Backup to internal hdd and rdx full + incremental
Veeam doesn't know, if the fullbackup from a disconnected RDX disk exist or doesn't exit anymore.
Creating a incremental backup without knowing if the fullbackup exists would be not so good
Second, if a new FullBackup was created on a backup repo, then the old chain is inactive and cannot be used anymore for doing incremental backups

Re: Backup to internal hdd and rdx full + incremental
Hello,
thank you for taking the trouble to clarify this once again.
did you know what happen if there is no space left on the rdx,
where the old backups deleted from the drive?
thanks

Backups are deleted according to retention. To clean up the drives forcibly upon swapping them, you can use the registry values described here.
