Best Approach for Proxy Setup
Hi All,
I was hoping someone could guide me please
We have 5 sites (1 x UK) and 3 in EU(Germany, Fance, NL) Each Site run ESX Server with a number of Guest's(all connected to the same ESX VCentre)
Our VBR is a Physical Server in UK Production Site connected to SAN, I am proposing that we have
1. A Virtual Backup Proxy Server on Each Site
2. VBR has a job that will backup the VM on each site, but uses the Proxy Server so we can limit throttle the bandwidth
3. If we need to restore a VM, we can restore it back to the ESX Host and use the Prox server to limit the bandwidth
Does this sound like a good setup, any help appricated

Re: Best Approach for Proxy Setup
Hi,
Yes, it does sound like a good setup in general.
I would recommend to have several jobs, at least one for each site.
Thanks!

Where are you going to restore from(where are you going to keep backups)?khalilm wrote:If we need to restore a VM, we can restore it back to the ESX Host and use the Prox server to limit the bandwidth

Re: Best Approach for Proxy Setup
Many thanks for the prompt reply, the backup will be stored on the SAN attached to the Phyical Server in the UK
One backup job will be as an e.g is backup VM's from Germany site, use the local backup proxy to limit the bandwidth, the VM will be backed up to the SAN in the UK
If i want restore that VM, i can can restore it back to the German site and again use the backup proxy to limit the bandwidth, it will be slow but then i will not cause a issue over the network
Thank again

Re: Best Approach for Proxy Setup
I am wondering how big are those backups/VMs? It may be tricky to transfer backup files through the half of Europe.
The recommended approach is to make local backups on each site and use backup copy job with WAN Acceleration to transfer copies of backups offsite.
It is more reliable and requires less data to transfer over WAN.

Re: Best Approach for Proxy Setup
Sounds like a bad design to me.
You really need local repository on each site for local primary backups, these can then send secondary copies back to your B&R server in the UK.
edit: SNAP!

Re: Best Approach for Proxy Setup
thank you so much, you have been very helpful
We have approx 1.2TB on each site approx to backup, so i can look at a local backup on each site and then a backup job back to the UK using my backup proxy so i can limit the bandwidth
Sounds like a better approach
