Calculate Digest Before Snapshot

I don't know if this has been discussed, but I wanted to make the suggestion (although I took little time to think of the implications and reasons "why not")

I noticed that the snapshot was taken prior to checking if the Replica Metadata existed. This means that if you need to re-hash, you have to leave the snapshot open for an extended period of time, especially bad for large / active servers. Is it possible to make this check and hash before the snapshot is taken?
