Do I need to manually recalculate the size of my backup jobs?

Post by bhagen »

I've noticed over the years that if I edit a backup job, then click on Virtual Machines, then click on Recalculate, the "Total size" *always* increases.

I'm of course guessing that's because the size of the vms I'm backing up is always increasing.

My question is: Do I have to recalculate manually? Why or why not?

Unless you have a specific (and very strange) requirement regarding size of source data, I don't see any reason to recalculate it manually. Thanks!

I guess it just makes me nervous to edit a job and find that it doesn't have the correct size. I don't know if that means that "delta" size is not actually being backed up, or if we're somehow not backing up everything...or if everything is ok and I don't have to worry about it. (But if everything is "ok", then why is there a discrepancy?)

Recalculate button refreshes the total size value after you add a new object to the job (or updates the size of source VM in case it increases). It doesn't affect actual backup size or VM recoverability anyhow, so, there is nothing to be worried about. Thanks!
