Feature request: Dedicated restore proxy for Linux FLR
Hi all,
we have a large environment with many small locations, where also small ESXi clusters with VMs are running. The backup is managed central from the main headquarter, but all onsite IT people at the locations outside must have the possibility to recover single files in-line to the running Linux VMs.
The IT people outside get only permissions to recover via Enterprise Manager, so we have two challenges:
- The user cannot choose a recovery proxy in the EM WebUI
- The user cannot run the Linux Helper FLR wizard in the EM WebUI
So our wishlist is:
- Why is it not possible to configure a bunch of linux recovery proxy (maybe one per branch office)? Not a temporary, we want a fix restore proxy, which the user can choose during EM WebUI recovery steps ?
- We need role base access to the bunch of linux recovery proxies , so that the user cannot see all possible linux recovery proxies
- In addition: It would be useful too, in the EM WebUI to be able to choose the recovery proxy for Windows FLR, is this possible ?
Thx, Chris

EM will look if there was a special FLR wizard setting for the actual logged in user was created. If not it will use the last configuration that was performed with an OtherOS FLR Setup wizard.
So in you environment, the admin need to allow the people once to login to B&R, perform the Linux FLR Network wizard and setup the correct things, then it should work for them at EM FLR.

Re: Feature request: Dedicated restore proxy for Linux FLR
Hi Andreas,
we are not really happy with the current process, how an Enterprise Manager Restore User could run a Linux FLR.
Yes you're right, that a Veeam Admin could give for a short time the branch office restore user permission to run the FLR Wizard, but this happens too often, and the branch office users are too many, so this workflow does not work in the real world.
The next problem is, that if a user gets "Restore" permission within the Veeam Console, the user can see and restore everthing, because the Veeam Console has no "roles based access" on specific Jobs/Tasks/vCenters .. e.c.t.
So your mentioned workflow, is not practical.
The next thing is, some restore users must be able to recovery in more than one branch office single linux files, so each time the restore user changes the branch office, he has to manually run the FLR Wizard, but before an Veeam Admin must allow the access to the console ? Sorry .. that's also not useable.
What's the problem, to give the EM Restore User the possibility to choose one of the (still not exsting but hopefully sometimes) pre-defined Linux FLR proxy ? This would solve all EM Linux FLR problems ?
Thx for some comments,
Chris

Yes, the current process is not ideal - we'll need to address that eventually.

Re: Feature request: Dedicated restore proxy for Linux FLR
Hi Gostev,
yes .. sorry it is very not ideal. We already wrote a powershell script, where we can "half" automate user - Linux- FLR entries into the Veeam SQL DB, but also this it not really practical, when a user Needs more Linux FLR configs, because of more branch offices which again needs different FLR helper VMs on different ESXi clusters.
Please think very soon about this topic, because it is a very important topic for our enterprise customers, which runs more linux VMs as you belive.
What is the problem thinking about "dedicated" Linux FLR appliances or the let the user choose a definied proxy during restore wizard, equal if it is a Enterprise Manager or Veeam Console session ?
Thx for any comments,
chris

EM-Roles Linux FLR by User configuration with the option to allow the user to change this configuration.
