Feature request: Location warning

Post by DanielJ » 1 person likes this post

I would like to be able to get a warning if trying to target a backup job to the same location as production data (to make sure backup data is always in a different datacenter than production). As the location warning works today, it's the other way around: the warning is issued when targetting a location which is NOT the same as the production location. I think both are valid use cases that cover very different problems. Of course, in order to not get a warning every time, this would have to be an either/or option: warn about same location or warn about different location.

I guess I could put together a script that checked this, but it would be after the fact, possibly after the job had already run the initial backup. It's much more useful to get the warning when selecting the repository.

Hi Daniel

Thanks for the request.
Currently, the feature is used to notify the administrator if data leaves the main location.
It wasn't build to give a warning, if you choose the same location.

You could give the production environment and the required repository the same location tags.
- production site hypervisor --> Location01
- production site backup storage --> Location02

- remote site hypervisor -->Location02
- remote site backup storage --> Location01

With this tagging, you would receive a warning if you choose the same location as the production data.
And if you choose the other site, no warning would be displayed.

Would that help?
Thanks

I'm afraid that would just be very confusing, and would only work for the special case of having exactly two locations.

I get your idea Daniel and it kind of makes sense.

What if you just had a periodically checking script (not pre/post) that simply polled the currently created jobs and

1. Checks the source and target locations
2. If there is a match, do two actions:
a. Disable the job
b. Send a warning email about the undesired configuration with the job, source object, and target repo

Seems like it's something you can pump out in less than an hour :)

Thanks Daniel and Harvey

We will think about it if we can reuse the location tags for such a query.

Thanks
