Feature Request - VEM Allow Both SQL Express and PostgreSQL

Post by tthomas1@ebsco.com »

I just installed a fresh copy of Veeam B&R 12.x for the first time and discovered by accident [and after opening a case] that it will not install SQL Express anymore. We are not SQL DBAs so we wouldn't have our own SQL box, so we need to now use PostgreSQL for new installs. The problem is this breaks Veeam Enterprise Manager which was installed with SQL Express, plus the fact that all our other B&R instances use SQL Express.

The pain point of having to uninstall/reinstall Veeam B&R on every one of our servers to just be able to continue using VEM with new instances is ... a bit over the top. My feature request is simple - if possible, can VEM be updated to be able to handle Veeam B&R instances in either format? I do see that others have posted about this issue before as seen below.

The overall direction is to discontinue SQL Server support completely in the future so unfortunately you can't avoid switching all backup servers to PostgreSQL sooner or later.

This can be quite easily done with configuration backup and restore to a fresh VBR install, so no "over the top" effort is required for sure.

Hi Gostev,

Thank you for this helpful comment. When you say "This can be quite easily done with configuration backup and restore to a fresh VBR install", I believe my steps would be as shown below [correct me if I'm wrong]. It's a bit much as it is time consuming to perform on every one of our Veeam B&R servers. Also, our connection to Enterprise Manager would be broken for each one I completed until ALL were done, when I could then do the same process on the Enterprise server. This would involve several days of work, but of course can be done.

If SQL is being dropped, my modified request would be that the migration process automatically install PostgreSQL the same way a fresh install would do. Doing a migration would reduce the steps by a lot and simplify things. That's my take at least! Thanks again.

1. Make sure I have a current configuration backup.
2. Uninstall Veeam Backup & Replication.
3. Reinstall Veeam Backup & Replication with the PostgreSQL option.
4. Restore the configuration backup.
