FreeNAS as backup repository using iSCSI

Post by omfk »

Hello,

as repository for our backup copy jobs I would like to use FreeNAS (4x4TB RAIDZ on HP Proliant ml310e v8) with iSCSI. A second machine will be installed later as shall be used as offline storage using FreeNAS replication. The FreeNAS machine is solely used as Veeam Target.

Current backup sources: 2 small Hyper-V machines (Veeam Essential), some small Linux machines, one big phys. Server inclusing file service (~2 TB of data), some smaller phys. server

Is there a best practice or "what to avoid" using iSCSI as repository target?
Are there any general drawbacks associated with this approach?

This thread mostly deals with including FreeNAS as Linux repository or requests for directly supporting FreeNAS.

I only want to use FreeNAS as a repository for backup copy jobs. The Veeam server is a physical machine.

What is the best protocol to access this storage? iSCSI, CIFS, pretent to be linux? Are there any tutorials for the selection?

There is a thread on the freenas forums where they discuss options and I think it's best to utilize it via iSCSI (speaking from past experience as well).
