Full Reinstall OS/SQL

Post by Lain »

Hi all.

We've had Veeam now running on tin for the last 5 years and it's time for the tin to be replaced with new.

Our current setup is Veeam B&R with SQL 2016 ENT.
Our new setup is Veeam B&R with SQL 2019 ENT.

As far as I know, the process would be:
  • On the new hardware
  • Install SQL 2019 ENT
  • Instal Veeam B&R selecting the SQL 2019 install
  • Import the config backup
  • Import the Repo
I'm assuming here that the DB will be populated as it scans the repo/ config import and then test.

Is there anything I'm missing?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Christopher

Your steps looks ok to me. Depending on the type of the repository, you don't have to import it.
When you do the configuration restore, Veeam will find the repository and reconnect to it.
The database will be populated with the restore points by the configuration backup.
Are you using File to Tape Jobs?

You find a checklist for the migration process of the VBR in our helpcenter.
Are you using the enterprise manager or other products from Veeam?

Many thanks Mildur.

We do have a file to tape job.
The rest are either Physical boxes (Agent) and VMWare to disk then a tape GFS Tape job.

Thanks.

Your welcome.
For the File to Tape Job, our configuration backup will not transfer the File Catalog.
You have to catalog each Tape on the new backup server before you can see whats on the tape and restore the files.
If you want to migrate the File catalog to the new server without cataloging the tapes first, it's better to migrate the database to the new SQL server with database export and import.

Perfect.
Our file to tape job is just old data so I'll kick a new backup of that once everything is up and running again.

Many thanks for the advice and claification.
