Immediate copy mode - merge

Post by mkretzer »

When will the merge in Immediate copy mode happen?

For example, if we put all our 3500 VMs in one immediate copy mode job it should be no issue as objects are copied right away when they appear - but them, when are the backups merged and/or when are GFS points beeing created?

Is this mode able to handle vast amounts of VMs in less jobs?

The merge logic (as well as retention, and virtually everything else) is the same between the two modes, so I would not expect any drastic scalability changes. The only major improvement is that v10 backup copy jobs no longer need to wait for the entire primary backup job to finish before starting to process backups (in case of per-VM backup chains only). However, this new behavior applies regardless of the backup copy job mode.

So to the original question: when is the merging beeing done? There is no fixed time as with interval mode when the latest time the merge should run is fixed. What happens if there are alot of jobs in one copy job and all the time these source jobs run? Or are the merges per source job object?

AFAIR, merges have already been "per source object" for a few versions now... since the time when we made them running concurrently.
